A couple years ago a woman I worked with called and said red fox were killing her chickens. I didn't believe her, since red fox are scarce around here. But when we got there, her video footage showed it was indeed a red fox. We caught two red fox, and one gray, and the killing stopped... for a couple months, until she called again and we removed another 2 red fox.
That was about 2 years ago, and she called again yesterday. She showed me very grainy pics of the culprit, which did appear to maybe be a red fox. It killed 2 of 5 chickens, hauling both of them over a 4" woven wire fence about an hour before dark.
We went out today. She lives in a neighborhood, but her neighbors know we'll be setting and are ok with it. But it's not a very big area. Maybe 10 acres or so. Set only 3 traps.
This is my first set, completed. Epler's mouse bait, and Coonduke's RFG.
Then, in an area where a 2-track dead-ended about 30 yards from another 2-track, with a ravine in between, Pete found a critter trail connecting the 2 2-tracks and made a flat set lured with Night Owl Coldroller.
When he was making that set, I was roaming around and I found a den. It seems to be fresh den, that's being used, but all that was on the ground in front of it where a few feathers... no bones like you'd expect if it were an active fox den at this time of the year. Somehow, I forgot to take a pic of it. Tomorrow I will and will also set a trail cam up on it.
This is on the other 2-track at the other side of the small piece of land. My second set.
Trap bed dug out.

Attractors: Fox pee and Pingley's Summer Serenade.
Now we wait and see. Not crazy about summertime trapping, but kind of excited to have sets to check in the morning.
