Or any Grayling for that matter? Back to MI from my northern trip and at some point I am going to figure out how to share some pictures (likely after my wife finishes her nap l0l ). I was surprised that there were no protections on the Grayling where I fished. Only a limit of five per person per day (I was told). Caught a few and released them all. Cool fish! Anyone else get these? Was told the native elders like them and sometimes the younger in the community will fish to bring some back for them.

I've caught them. They are some neat fishes. I also ate them fresh caught, and they were delicious.

I've caught lots of them on many lakes & streams in the Bristol Bay region on the Alaskan Peninsula.
I used mostly either egg pattern flies, or tiny Panther Martin spinners.
Tributaries streams of the Upper & Lower Ugashik Lakes and Lake Becharof had the best grayling fishing.
They eat real good in a cast iron skillet with melted butter.
Very similar in taste & texture to Lake or Round Whitefish, Bloater Chub, or Cisco.

I've caught and eaten them from 50-60 different streams in Alaska. Always thought they were mush. I'd rather eat almost any other fish. They sure are beautiful, however.

Jack The guy I was fishing with made reference to mush as well. Of course he was against keeping them for dinner.

They do have a pretty soft texture. Flavor isn’t bad though. Caught two one summer that were 22.5 inches long. My best was 11 inches or so lol.

w Caught mine on various fly patterns. They were in feed mode though!

I've caught some in Alaska on wet flies, released all of them. Used various wet and dry flies. The dry flies gave me a second to react. They were hitting the surface hard!

Caught a lot of them in Alaska, mostly on small spinners. I am going to agree with those that describe them as mushy. Fun to fish and fight like crazy, but for eating I would rather have a fresh Dolly Varden.
Moosetrot Understood. but this is coming from someone who in a pinch has eaten large mouth bass and smoked sucker!

Moosetrot Absolutely !! Have caught many hundreds of grayling and fed them to my dogs. Like eating oatmeal with hair in it . How can something have that many bones ? Dollies would be my choice too .

Best way to eat them is build a fire on the gravel bar and let it burn to coals then put the grayling in the coals and cover with more coals. Let cook for about 8 minutes and take it out. The skin will be charred, pinch the meat behind the head and peel the fillet off. Most of if not all of the bones will stay on the fish, meat will be nice and flakey not mushy. Enjoy
Dog faced pony soldier and proud of it!

Enjoy ^^^^^THIS^^^^^ Cook till browned, flaking, & crispy. Not under done & mushy. Cooked them just like I do brook trout in the piping hot skillet with butter. I found them to be excellent fresh out of the Icy water !! w
