Back in the day, before computers, my roofing materials suppliers used to give out pitch calculators. They were various angles cut into heavy card stock. You stood back a ways from the gable and lined up one of the peaks on the cardboard with the actual gable and it told you the pitch.

They all had the multiplier for that particular pitch so you could figure the run if you knew the width.

I bid many roofs that way without ever going on them.

Wish I still had one.

I use a torpedo and a speed square
