That picture reminds me of my sets-set so long without a catch that the springs rusted off......

A pee set downwind of baited set has been very productive here.
Good luck.

I use a stepdown dirthole set 90% of the time. Just have a lot of confidence in this set. Self guided, so don't have to worry about that. Make it just as wide as your trap. I make it fairly long and want the trap at least 8 inches below ground level. Put the dirthole at the bottom, vas parallel to the surface as you can. You want to make them step to see in the dirthole. Not exactly sure why, but I get a lot of double front foot catches.

Trapped a long line with a guy once that loved dirt holes. I did the flat/post set at every location, he did a dirt hole. He was bragging how good he was after a week. Dirt hole’s were cleaning up. A week after that he was crying how the coyotes were passing his sets up for the flat sets. After two weeks it was even for both sets. Every location gets the dh and flat set.

Praise the Lord and Pass the ammunition.

We usually get significant rain just before our trapping seasons start. About 5 years ago I started making Mark Zagger’s pipe dream set. It is my go-to canine set now. Using dried grass, over a screen, as a trap cover, and a 10-inch plastic pipe, keeps the critter’s attention on the pipe and not on where they’re stepping. Even my flat sets get a dried grass covering.

In addition, instead of hand packing the trap to stabilize, I pound dirt against the jaws. SOME of your problem might be the trap wobbles in its bed when canines step into the pattern. Dig a bed the size of the trap and about 3 inches deep. Pound grooves so the levers of your coilspring traps hold the trap just below the ground surface. Use a metal screen as a pan cover and pound the dirt against the jaws. Then spread a big handful of dried grass over the screen and around the trap bed.

Put about a teaspoon of bait in the pipe pounded 8-inches into the ground. The canines will dance all around your set trying to pull the baited pipe out.

I usually trap on the 2 track road. My favorite location is a 4 way junction. Place an old tire in the center so that vehicles or farm equipment can straddle it. You can dig it down just a bit if necessary. Leave it there. Coyotes will start to use it as a scent post. Place your trap inside as a flat set and bait/scent the inside rim of the tire. When Wiley jumps in the get the bait he is yours.

Anything the governments gives you they must first take away from someone else.

Favorite to catch any critter is a blind set..

Almost almost make a blind set in combo with another stanky set
