I shot a 5 x 5 bull elk in the neck with my 500 Performance Center S&W. 385 grain Remington core lock HP. I put the bullet approximately 6 inches behind his right ear. He was quartering towards me and the bullet shattered seven vertebrae & stopped just behind the left shoulder blade. total penetration, approximately 20 inches plus. There’s not a blackbear on this planet will stand that kind of horsepower. Sidenote, I called the folks at Remington to inquire about their bullet at 1700 feet a second and the guy I talked to said not to worry that bullet was designed to be used In a Sabo slug in a 12 gauge at 1900 feet a second. Needless to say the elk dropped where he was standing couldn’t ask for more than that.wiw
