I've heard pre-emergence in spring works fairly well in preventing crab grass from coming up. Is there anything that will kill it during the summer without injuring grass?

I used to apply preemergent very early and then about a month later, all before the lawn awakens from winter. Crabgrass and dandilions (sp) are much less of a problem when preemergent is used.

If there is you have to be licensed to buy it.

Pre emergent is your best bet, get it on and watered in at the
right time, if you have a wet spring they say you need to reapply
6 to 8 weeks later.

You have to put down pre emergent in the spring when the forsinthias start blooming.

You don’t need a license to buy it. Get you some Drive xl off Amazon and follow the label exactly as it says; it’ll kill it fine. If you have any ag connections, Callisto will work wonders on it as well

Drive XLR8 works great this time of year...follow directions. Quinclorac works great...might be same active ingredients as XLR8. Make sure to use a surfactant. I usually spray this time of year as I can see the color variation and know exactly where to spray.

Four years ago I had a lot of crabgrass. I have about .6 of an acre of grass and had a couple dozen large patches. I used Trimec plus. I sprayed the patches about mid summer and it really set it back and then sprayed those patches again about 5 weeks later. I have had hardly any in my yard since. I spent about $160 for the chemical back then and have some left. I bought some Ortho Weed-B-Gone on sale but have not needed to use that yet.
I have never done the pre-emergence control.

I used Spectracide twice this summer. It slowed it down, but didn't kill it.

Quinclorac is the chemical that (supposedly) kills crabgrass without harming regular grass. It seems to only kinda-sorta work. When I use it the crabgrass turns red and looks unhealthy, but seems to recover after a couple weeks. I suppose if you kept up with it for a couple weeks in a row it'd do better. But the best way to control crabgrass is to have a thick tall lawn that shades it out, along with using pre-emergent once in spring and again in mid summer. Pre-emergent only last a couple months and then has to be reapplied.

When I hit it with Spectracide that supposedly kills crab grass according to the label, it did the same thing, it turned it red. Then it recovered. So, I hit it again with the Spectracide. It did the same thing once again. But, now it seems to be flourishing once again. I wonder if that Drive XLR8 some on here mentioned would kill it?

If you want a nice lawn at least 2 rounds of pre-emergence are needed along with thick turf. If you dont have thick grass to start with - you have voids for weeds. You can kill them out and then you will have voids......what is wrong with crab-grass? Excellent coverage, durable and high protein when harvested at proper time. Personally, I like crabgrass. I got out of lawncare about 20 years ago as people want perfection without doing the work. It takes high fertility, thick grass, watering, fungicides and insecticides to grow nice thick turf. I moved out of the city and now am much more at peace with just mowing weeds that appear annually and looking forward to crabgrass for the cows to eat.

About the only thing thats green this time of the year, lol

I try to keep it under control in the flower beds, but everywhere else it's free to flourish... grin
