Over many years, I've been involved with moose research on the Susitna River and elsewhere in Alaska, and I've been fortunate to have taken several while hunting. They were an integral part of life for nearly 30 years for me.

This is a typical winter moose at my place in Idaho.

This was my first bull moose in the Alphabet Hills, Alaska. It was 55", but the photo is somewhat "faked".

I've heard and read many times to use a big, belted, heavy bullet for taking moose. I found many times that the little 25-06 was plenty of gun.

This was part of a calf mortality study where the calf was killed by a grizzly bear. The green is a radio collar.

Cool pics!! Saw my first 2 years ago in Washington and was amazed at the size. Pics just don’t really show it until you’re less than 30 yards from one.

Tatiana -

Your posts are always interesting. Thanks. I didn't know the stiff hair on moose legs was used on the bottoms of skis. Here, I know they used to use otter pelts.

Like grizzlies in Alaska, there seems to be those that eat moose calves (meaters) and those that stick to vegetation (planters). Depending on the location, the culprits leading to poor moose calf recruitment may be grizzlies, black bears, or wolves.

Thanks for your additions.

Jack

I recall a story about you passing up a nice young mulligan bull while wood cutting years ago. You thought that the entire Rosie Creek drainage was in the Fairbanks Mgt Area (bow only) but the boundary actually was the creek itself...!

Yeah Pete -

Training a biologist to read and understand regulations is an impossible task.

I already had a moose that year, but Miss Lisa was still looking...

Best of luck to you. Successful or not, I'm betting it'll be a memorable hunt. Have a blast.

Manitoba moose are in sever decline through several reasons.
1- brain worm spread in association with white tail deer in their overlapping ranges
2- uncontrolled harvest by status peoples that regular rules of hunting do not apply ie night hunting, airplane spotting, hunting in restricted areas, and the list goes on.

Pieces of moose hide(the stiff short hair or clipped longer hair)are laced on the bottom of snowshoes when travelling in hilly areas or during crust to keep the snowshoes from sliding back.
A piece about the size of the sole of your foot is sufficient.
