I always remake the set into a walk through double dirt hole. Clean set a few steps away.

When I was a little kid, the old trapper that taught me how to trap told me to remake the set in the exact same spot and be as scent free as possible for remakes. Then gather up all the droppings the coyote left and use them in about the same place you would put lure on a flat set. Then take urine from the previous coyote you trapped and spray it all over the droppings, and then just wait.

I still do this, and don't have a lot of success with coyotes, but I am not a very good coyote trapper either.

As far as females on the first catch with bobcats I certainly agree. I usually can get another one off a remake; just takes some time.

Good thread, one of Savell's best.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Any particular reason you do that?

If I remake a set I always make sure to have a new set close to catch circle. Or I pull the trap and move it just outside of catch circle. There’s always a chance of the next coyote not wanting to step inside the catch circle. Snow has showed me plenty of times how many coyotes just want nothing to do with the catch circle. So prefer not to rely on 50/50 odds if next coyote is willing to play in the circle or not.

Any rhyme or reason as to where outside the trap circle you go? Upwind? Downwind? Are most of your sets along travel paths so you just go up or down the trail a bit?

Ksnow, I go down wind and use the stinky catch circle to wind advantage. If trapping along a travel path such as log road, gas well road, or two track through farm land I set the same side of the path way as the catch circle I just drop down or up the travel way a few feet. Have notice on few gas well roads though it’s not a bad idea to set the opposite side of the travel way for tracks showing as they got closer to catch circle they would crossover and favor the other track of the road till they pass the fresh catch circle so when I see this happening I just drop a set across from the road from catch circle with some urine and droppings sometimes I’ll make a small punch hole and put a lure down it I’ve found most coyotes like to dig at to get the feet moving around the set some more.

Yep.

I don't want to dig into original hole with bait/lure remnants (getting it on my auger, rake, etc) so, I move out hard left/right and as far as chain will reach from the location of original hole/bed

Also I want the reset trap as close to circle edge as it'll go (without having to pull/re-drive stake). Rarely will the next coyote walk around in the center of the catch circle, but some will stomp around just inside the edges.

If not wanting to pull up trap. Keep a few pieces of chain handy and can just lengthen it to where the trap goes to the circles edge for a quick remake. But this is good for one more catch after that your catch circle is going to end up a crop circle to be seen from a plane haha!

Hammer read my mind on the extra chain lengths...it is a slick method and saves on pulling up the original stake.
I can relate to Savell's female coyote comment I just reset after a female and have caught several afterwards in the same set.
Off topic....I laugh when I think about be "scent free" in our trapping and walking into the catch circle and remaking the set....odors every where.
JC Conner mentioned that he frequently scoops up the dirt from catch circles in a clean can and uses it on some of his other trap sets. So with
that in mind, why couldn't a trapper use catch circle dirt from the caught female and make new sets since the caught female seems to be the ticket
for success?

Swamp my best success using the dirt from a remake is a double dirt hole (mouse hole set) that Tom Krause used. Visualize two small dirt holes about ten inches a part with the trap in between them. One hole gets a handful of dirt from remake and the other red fox gland lure. Slick.

I always had more repeat catches at the location when i didn't shoot the coyote at the set. One of those ratchet kill poles or just a regular catch pole to get the coyote out of the catch circle before you kill It.

A really top shelf, super attractive bait really helps maximize a remake. Lots of less cautious coyotes or really hungry coyotes make remakes shine too

I have a question about the remake. Do you just leave the circle alone or do you "rake it" to not look like a bomb went of (meaning blend in the circle to be not so defined)? I have never been able to make a catch in a remake, tracks show they avoid it. Thanks
