you can have as many as you want and this isn't about having a set number or minimum number or anything.
so something like a fire happens and you have lost all your guns , this is totally hypothetical just a fresh start
insurance check comes and like all insurance checks never what it needs to really be what are you replacing first?
based on most used and handiest not necessarily collection , collectable ect. no rules about is it still made ect.. you want to get back to shooting what you like at the game you want to chase , we can pretend your life isn't completely up-ended by the fire and it will take years to get back to normal, we are pretending , the house was just replaced presto.
since I am thinking all new I guess first thing would be pick up a new carry gun probably a G19MOS gen5 then a 10/22 with an lpvo then a short shotgun 20 inch barrel 12 ga a dispatch pistol , probably another wrangler they are really handy to have a couple of for trapping don't feel bad if it gets dropped. build out an AR good components good lpvo a bolt action 308 with a decent scope.
that's 6 there would be game/competition specific guns later and a spare or two but that would be the core of getting me back to the things I want to do and enjoy.
what order exactly would depend on what season was coming although bird , trapping and deer sure run very close to each other in dates.
what would be your core , it doesn't have to be what you have today , just if you were starting over what would you choose as the core.

Ok I’ll play along
Savage 99 in 308
Marlin 880SQ in 22LR
And either a
Winchester model 12 or browning A5 in 12 Gauge
Springfield Hellcat 9mm
What came next would depend on what came available and when but those would cover my hunting needs and self defense for a while till I got back on my feet, unfortunately I have been there and had to start over from scratch so I k ow how hard it can be

it doesn't have to be a fire
it is just a way to think , what do I really use for the enjoyment or need of it
I was using it as sort of an exercise of what to give away
it was never my intention to go to my grave with a vast collection of guns , I figured I would give them away to people who they would be special too along the way. having dealt with the guns of an estate I am thinking I might pick up the pace on that.
I have a single shot 22 I don't use that is going to be the first thing to go a little Marlin youth gun , I am giving that to my brother for my nieces to learn on with an invitation to come shoot with uncle Pete I'll bring the ammo.

it doesn't have to be a loss at all
if I enjoyed the game and games I do and hadn't gathered what I had over the years , this would be my list to play and protect just the same.

I think I would check gun broker for an older 10-22, modern winchester model 70 in 270, same model in 300 win mag and 22-250. a ruger markII in 22 hornet, mossberg 500 in 12 gauge, a ruger single six in 22, a rock island 1911 in 45 acp. Then whatever caught my eye.

It's fun to shoot and reload also when I trap the big wood I carry it under my jacket.

my son played
MR920L his current carry gun this is a glock but made by Shadow systems 17 slide length 19 grip length with RMR dot all the things you want to do to a glock already done so your running a factory production gun.
Berretta 1301 ether comp or tactical aka short barrel what was available at the time might decide a 12ga pump gun he wasn't sure exactly what model right now Ruger MK4 tactical SFAR 20 inch 308 a BCM 16inch AR-15

I see a lot of 10/22s shotguns with short/shorter barrels AR-15s deer rifles 22 handguns for trapping personal defense pistols
which definitely make sense
