Thank you sir. Those two dogs look like they can get it done.
Andy Weiser is a government guy in northern Nevada now and has brindle (and blonde) curs. That's where I got mine. If you need his contact info, let me know.

I’m loving all of the different breeds and the companionship everyone gets with their dogs. I like the looks of the mountain curs and pleasantly surprised to hear they are a good family dog as well. Right now I’m just looking for a family pet and trap line dog that I will use to help find micro locations but would love to try the coyote hunting thing with a dog in the future. Lazarus I really enjoyed your demo as well it was very interesting with the drone and trail cameras set up for the two weeks. I also liked how you said your dog would check your traps for you and let you know if you had a catch. Very informative with keeping track of the different locations by the number of cats you see. Does Andy Weiser have a website for his dogs? I saw there is a mountain cur kennel in Wyoming that sells them as well. We might not do anything until next spring but are wanting to do some research and pick a good breed.

Thank you. Coyote Days was a great experience for me. It was great to learn so much from incredible trappers. I'm excited for the new season to put some of these ideas into practice.

I don't think Andy has a website. I have a phone number if you need it.

It was my second year at coyote days and it’s been fun and a good learning experience both years. I’ll private message you for the number if I decide to go that route. Thank you.

For all of you considering Cur dogs I would suggest taking a look at the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur breed. They have been primarily bred for tree dogs, but many are used for trapline dogs, coyote decoy dogs, blood trackers, hog dogs, and there are even reports of some that worked livestock. There are definitely people using them in the American west for mountain lion and bear.

They come from the old stock Mountain Curs of the past. Robert Kemmer began line breeding his dogs in the 1970's and has continued to this day. If you look at the modern Original Mountain Cur breed they seem to be smaller than they would have been 40 years ago. Honestly, some of them look very Feist like. These Kemmer dogs still have the size and grit the old school Curs of the past had. Essentially, an all-around versatile dog. Most come yellow, but brindle and black are also acceptable colors as per the breed standard.

I believe, but not 100% certain, that Andy Weiser has or has had some Kemmer dogs that he uses/used on the trapline. I know NY trapper Von Strahan, who recently passed away, owned multiple Kemmers over the years.

Robert Kemmer still breeds these dogs, although he has scaled back considerably from his efforts in the 1980's and 90's. That being said there are several people around the country breeding these dogs in addition to Robert.

If you are at all interested in them I would encourage you to go on Facebook where there are at least three Kemmer Stock Cur groups, and from there you can find contact information for the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur Breeders Association. If not on Facebook feel free to reach out to me and I can get you pointed in the right direction.

Just giving you guys something else to consider.

I have a male Blue Heeler that I use as a trapline dog. Smart as a whip and totally fearless.

100 pound dog in a twelve pound body. Don’t matter the size of the dog but the fight in a dog. I would look at the Jag terriers too but from what I seen they could be a liability issue.

Hundred pound dog in a 12 pound body yeah. Well, I’m here to tell you if you’re 12 pound dog runs into 100 pound dog that knows how to fight and isn’t afraid to do so and his owner doesn’t tell him leave that little dog alone you’re gonna hear bones crunching, and a dog is gonna be dead. There’s a reason that group of terriers are commonly referred to his rat, terriers and mousers. I don’t expect my dogs to catch mice or rats but I don’t have to worry about seeing them dead droop in a coyote jaws either

I'm on my second Drauthar and really love them they are known as the fur feather dog. One of the tests is to track a fox scent for a quarter of mile jump in a four foot tall enclosure jump out with the fox and bring it back to where he started. Like it was said earlier they are really smart. Another test is to track a blood trail or to kill a live animal such as a coon . My male was 100 lbs my female is 65lbs very loving dogs but can be protective.

I'm personally a great fan of the Hangin' Tree Cow Dog. It's my wolfing dog. He has found several dozen wolves for me on drags. Remember, 90% of the time, they are companion/house dogs and you want good disposition. Can't say enough good about the intelligence of a hangin' tree.

Them hangin tree dogs originated just east of me in the Flint Hills before Charlie moved to Oklahoma. Gritty dogs.

I'd like to try a Lacy

Not familiar with that breed. Are they Catahoula or cur?

Guys I know use jack Russel to bay up pigs. It works great. They find the pig and keep it spinning in circles. You can walk right up to the pig and shoot it with a pistol. My kind of hunting.

You can't beat a jack Russell or Russell cross.

They have the heart, they're smart and theye quick.

They know how to "work" an animal In the trap.

We use them.for yotes and cats.

Too bad you're so far away. Jerry jack russel "Shorty" and your dog would turn out so beautiful dogs.

Our neighbor has airdales for yotes and wants to use jerrya dog as a stud for his female.

Shorty is short, stocky ,and muscular as all get out.

Basset hound beagle.
To the original post about a family dog/hunting partner. Our old guy is such a low maintenance, trainable.... Killer. He's both a (affectionately)"good dog" and gets after the critters. We don't hunt him, but we think the original owner did.

He's a rescue we got from a senior who had to go into assisted living. This dog was well trained, and perfectly content when we lived in small quarters. I'm definitely thinking of getting one, younger, in the future.
