No Amish directly around here, although I think there is now a group about 100 miles west, southwest of here. I've run into them at thrift stores in Sioux Falls. I wish they had a couple sets of their heavy, dark clothes and they would wear the clean ones when they come in to be around "the English", serious B.O. problems. The Hutterites wear heavier clothes but because they use electricity all the time, I think they bathe more.
I "retired" from our local "farmers market" this year after 5 1/2 years doing it. The organizer makes most of their family's money by the weekly lot rent (not much for each booth but it still adds up if a person has booked a good amount of vendors). A lot of non produce things but I did produce and some home processed stuff. One of the last straws for me was a couple of guys who were buying wholesale from the Amish in southern Iowa and selling up here-- I don't know if they sold their Amish-purchased stuff between there and here or just trucked it up here. Yeah, they must have been getting stuff super cheap to pay for fuel and still sell at competitive prices here. Sort of defeats the concept of "local produce".
I know the Amish are peaceful people and I respect them for that but they can stay away from southeast South Dakota.

I think all of the farmers markets in Oregon have by-laws that require the vendors to be growing their own produce. Over the years we have caught a few cheaters at our market and threw them out. Local produce only and grown by the vendor. The exception is vendors that are doing value added stuff like pastries and jams can buy ingredients form the other vendors. I've been doing our local farmers market for about 40 years now. My wife and her niece after we wild picked chanterelles and huckleberries: We also sell value added stuff like our "fruitcicles" made with our fruit, honey and water. A good seller on those hot summer days. If I wore darker clothes could I go as an Amish man Keith?

My cousin in Md, has Amish around him, he's friends with the local gynecologist, The doctor schedules the Amish women's pap smears and exams on mondays cause bath night is Saturday.....by the end of the week he says they're a little gamey.... Yeah, I suspect so. I find it sort of wild that the Amish will do 21st century medicine. Do they have medical insurance or just pay cash for such medical appointments?

beaverpeeler- Is that you in the "colorful" hat?
Yeah, some of the larger farmer markets here have a governing board and something such as a "charter" but nothing in law says they have to do it. Our bedroom town market is all a one woman (well, her husband is involved) show. She started it in 2018. I sold some white Casper pumpkins during Sept that year. One cold Saturday, there were 4 of us vendors. Yesterday, I stopped by, and even with a bunch of road construction (actually helped her push in more vendors because one street exit was closed) she had 45 vendors and the place was hopping. At least two CBD vendors, maybe more.

Yep, NonPC, that was me in the Colombian sabanero.
Our market was the first in Oregon to allow the sale of CBD. I was a board member at the time and on the selection committee. I did all the appropriate research on Oregon's laws to see if we were a legal venue for cannabis sales and wrote up a new section for our vendor's handbook to allow it. In our case it is only allowed if the grower and processor of it are the same person as the vendor.

Amish can’t have mustaches. Just beards. At least the ones in Pennsylvania.

Amish can’t have mustaches. Just beards. At least the ones in Pennsylvania. The Amish shave their mustaches because men in the German militaries grew usually large and oddly shaped mustaches, that they took pride in and shaving the mustache was a sign of pacifism. I did have a Mennonite friend of mine jokingly tell me that the Amish men all kiss on the lips during their services and that the mustaches tickled each others' noses to much. Carl, you also don't have the Amish look that years of close marriages produces. It can be very hard to tell some Amish people apart in some colonies. They have been trying to improve their gene pools by marrying children to children from other colonies, including ones in Europe. They have a lot of recessive genetic defects in most Amish populations. I have never had any problems with any Amish people. Some do have BO. I would guess many don't use deodorant. Keith

LOL, must be here in St. Marys county. I developed an affinity for El Products at the age of 11, riding in UN air-conditioned truck cabs with Amish in July and August.

He's no nonsense and the ignorance of the posts quite frankly whizzed him off..enough for him to mention it to me and I feel the same way he does.
And on behalf of the amish people I know..
...I'll say what they can't and wouldnt say even if they could.. yall that are full of ignorance and disrespect and are stupid enough to let the whole site see the level of that ignorance can KMA.

Been around them all my life, heck, they built my house. They poke fun at us English, both to our faces AND behind our backs. And don't seem upset if you throw a little back their way. Usually all in good fun, not talking mean spirited, although, have heard them get nasty. End of the day, there's good and bad in ALL groups, and they're no exception.

Seem to run into one once in awhile that I loose my trust in though. Had one fix two zippers on blue jeans , he charged me $ 2.00 each. I gave him $ 10.00 because those were almost new jeans @ $ 40 each. I was that happy with his work.

I have a very favorable image of Amish people. Any religion that produces mostly hard working, honest people, who won't harm others, is a good one in my opinion. I do find them a little odd, but they find us "English" odd too. I have one Amish friend, 1 very good, former Amish friend and lots of positive Amish acquaintances, where we greet each other and chat whenever we see each other. I wish I had Amish closer to my farm, because I would hire some to work here.
I was with a Mexican friend of mine, who is a very hard worker and we saw some Amish people and he told me "Those people really work their "blanks" off."
One friend of mine had a very lazy ex. She didn't appreciate the hard work he did for their family, trying to build a labor intensive business. When they split up, I only half jokingly told him that he should replace her with a former Amish woman.
The Amish are people like anyone else, I've heard of a few criminal ones, but for the most part, I believe they are very decent people.
