Yes at Dollar General. It goes to literacy. I have two grandkids that are severely dyslexic and the charity is dear to my heart. Most other roundups No

I very rarely due. Here is an example where it may have a benefit.I go to a local farm that sells produce.Early in the season before corn sales you just have to know they have stuff for sale as there is no sign.I have been going there for 30 plus years. The farmer and I became friends .We talked about hunting and trapping as he had lots of coons in his corn.Usually a half hour conversation.Well he passed away.I am now working with the second generation.I went a couple weeks ago and purchased a few things. When I paid, the daughter was there who I have know as a child. She said it will be $5.92. So I handed her $6 and she said I will get your change.I said forget it.They are hard working and always been extra nice. Before I left I ordered some beans. When I went back to pick them up I also grabbed a cabbage and my beans. My beans were $8 and she weighted the cabbage. She said that will be $10.I can tell you my bill was more than $10 total. smile

Sometimes after being rung up there might be a couple cents change, instead of taking it I tell the cashier to put the change into their retirement fund, lol

Nope I’d don’t donate until I verify the organization isn’t communist

How about this one! I VERY rarely go to Good Will.Only if looking for something I may be able to find that I need. Not real fond of the charity.I find an item and go to pay. They ask do you have any discounts like veteran or senior. They can tell by looking at me that I am older than dirt. Anyway I say yes both.So they discount the purchase. Then when I am done paying with cash the bill could be like $3.85.They ask me do I want to round up ? So you just gave me a discount and then you get what you are selling for free other than overhead and you want me to give you more.I mean, I just gave you free money !

Here's my thoughts: if it's a chain store, you are most likely just giving them a tax write off. If it's some mom and pop store with a donation jar to help a sick kid or such, that's a different story. I believe in tipping at restaurants, and people will say that the system shouldn't require it, but it is what it is, and the waitress deserves to make a decent wage so I don't feel bad about that at all. I don't mind donating, I just want to be able to pick my charity.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I agree. Next time, I’m going to ask them if they would like to round down and they make the donation.

it depends exactly what it is for.

thing about it this way if you round up and all they say is charity , it could be the "Human fund" or worse it could be a anti hunting trapping org posing as an environmental groups or a Eugenics organization claiming to be a woman's health charity.

so if it is less than 50 cents and a charity I support , yes I will round up , if my bill is 22.07 NO I am not rounding up to 23 dollars that isn't rounding the way I was taught you have to be past the half way point to round up.

That is pretty good, but remember not to be too hard on the cashier. They are asking because they were told to, and probably know next to nothing about whatever the cause is.

When Mac Donald's pan handles me in the Drive thru line
trying to bum my change from me for charity I always decline.

I then counter propose to them that they should, instead,
donate cash to my personal charity, and give me my meal on the house !!! laugh

They always decline also.

I find it annoying & disingenuous that a multi-billion corporation is
pan handling & begging for my spare change.

Let them donate some of their massive corporate profits.

I prefer to target my generosity to individuals that I know need it, rather than to a charity who gives only a percentage of it to who knows who.

No, the local hardware chain store does it for Seattle Childrens Hospital. When my friend's daughter was at Seattle Childrens with cancer, they had no problem sending him a bill for six figures for a few days of "treatment". Why should I donate them a dime. I'll bet the store writes a check equal to the amount they collect, then take a charitable contribution right-off.
Saint Jude's on the other hand, is a fantastic organization, no trouble at all contributing to them.

How come stores never ask if you want to contribute to the NRA or GOA?

Wifey runs a non-profit youth center here in town, that's an off-shoot of a mother's ministry that she also ran for 2 years, supported in part by a used book store. She started having the book store ask customers if they want to round up to support the youth center, some customers do, and some don't. Money helps to buy snacks and such that are provided for free to the kids.

I do sometimes but more often I don’t. I give $ intentionally other ways. I agree about not giving the cashiers a hard time about it. Can you imagine being a cashier and the mgr insisting you ask every customer through the door for a donation.
