I get $5/dozen for mine here. But we have a good community of folks wanting farm fresh eggs. When we are feeding our chickens we really just cover feed costs at that price. I let them free range all winter and feed carcasses. Egg quality goes up and cost goes down.

As noted, at moment layed, egg comes out with slimy looking waxy coating that dries within first minute or so.......bloom. Read a book once about provisioning pleasure boats for ocean crossings, and they mentioned farm fresh, unwashed eggs. Claimed they would keep for a couple months. About once a week they were to be turned upside down.

Thanks guys

Mine would go to roost at least half an hour before all the rest so as to lock in their spot on the back right roost bar. They would lock down and fend off all comers.

Like old ladies showing up early for church to get their favorite seat on the back pew.

Other things I noticed about the easter eggers and blue and green eggs, the yolks were 125% or so bigger than any of the brown eggs. No comb, so no frostbite in winter.

Avian flu is world wide and can and does mutate often as we know when we see many cases in dairy herds now. We wil be living with these mutations for the foreseable future for sure. Just as we will with other diseases. Sometimes the mutant versions have lower mortality rates than the earlier ones did. That in many cases can be due to the fact that the disease organisms can not survive if all the hosts die off. Scientists and researchers may be able to find better ways to limit the spread of the disease. It does get harder from a food production aspect when we concentrate the hosts, even if the spread might come from a smaller flock.

Went to the store this morning ,to get some groceries for this coming weekend when my son and his wife get here. $5.99 for a dozen large eggs. shocked

Came home without the eggs. Will drive 26 miles to a different store in a day or two , and check them out.

The recent big increases in the price of store-bought eggs has caused two or three of our local Amish to be sold out when we go there for other items. That’s the first time I can ever remember them not having eggs available.

Eh...wot?

Might need to get some chicken again I kind of miss having them around I sure noticed the increase in crickets, pill bugs and earwigs lately. Toads are back I don’t mind having them around the tree frogs disappeared when the chickens got here never came back.
