We go to the local Amish when our birds can't keep up. $3.00 a dozen for some nice, big eggs from farm-raised chickens. .
Eh...wot?

The local Amish are at 2.50 to 2.75 a dozen. I get 5 dozen every time I go by

My standard price is $10 for 3 dozen. Allows me to use 18 count or 12 count cartons. Makes the math easy. $3.33 / doz.
If they stack up, got a lady that will take 6 doz or more for $2.50
Then there is the friends and family discount. Free.

that reminds me I need to call my cousin and get another 5 dozen
I like them unwashed , less labor in them that way and the don't need refrigeration.

Because eggs have a naturally antibiotic "bloom" on the shell from the laying hen. Washing them washes it away.
Eh...wot?

My wife soaks ours warm water before washing them. We wash them because some have chicken crap on them. It could add a strange flavor if cracked into the pan.

I sort clean from not clean, then put the not clean in a small bucket, cover them with water, then hit them with a scrub pad. Lay them on paper towels to dry, then into carton and into fridge.
During dry weather, most come out clean. During wet weather, dirty feet cause the most problem. Problem made worse if the birds roost in the nest boxes.
As noted, at moment layed, egg comes out with slimy looking waxy coating that dries within first minute or so.......bloom. Read a book once about provisioning pleasure boats for ocean crossings, and they mentioned farm fresh, unwashed eggs. Claimed they would keep for a couple months. About once a week they were to be turned upside down.
