Gang, I’ve been clearing brush for my cousin and she has an infestation of poison ivy crawling up the trees,,
I knew she had some scattered around and I suggested tordon for it,,, until I saw the vines going up the trees,, I’m not joking when I say some vines are as big as a small woman’s arm.
What herbicide is effective on poison ivy,, but safe for trees??
I read that tordon is going to kill anything it touches.

roundup has a poison ivy variety, I think it has something else in it to help with difficult plants and brush...but it has to be sprayed on the leaves which is then transmitted to the roots to kill it, if the vine is climbing the tree it's not going to work, but if you cut the vines and soak the cut in the recommended dilution of roundup it will get to the roots, but then you have the issue of cutting the vine without getting the sap on you...prepare accordingly.... cool

Are you sure it is poison ivy? That sounds too big to be around here.

Crossbow works well for poison ivy.

I would recommend cutting the vines and a few drops of tordon on the cut end.

We do that on the thick vines that grow up trees also. Cut off and use a small brush to apply pure Roundup

Thanks gang… yup.. it’s 100
Percent poison ivy…. I pulled this vine out,,,, it was every bit of 40-50 feet long . Also lots of Virginia creeper vines as well… which Ive heard people getting all itchy from it too.

I’m fortunate because it doesn’t affect me,, that is why I was able to handle it without breaking out with it,,
I feel badly for you guys that get it,,, it looks really uncomfortable to catch it.

You will become sensitized with repeated contact and you will get it really bad from then on. I had that same attitude and was exposed a lot while I was a tech for the phone company. I am very careful around it now.

Uncomfortable is an understatement!
My body is highly allergic to it. Have been covered head to toe. Eyes, ears, mouth, between fingers and toes. And the dreaded neather regions....
Have to take methyl pred pack and get shot when it gets festering on my hide

There are two types of poison ivy, western and eastern. The western grows in bunches close to the ground, but no vines. The eastern has vines and can climb trees, fences, etc.
I have killed it in my woods using just plain Round Up, but Crossbow would be my first choice for any leafy plants.

This is the best way I've found, Roundup mixes well with Diesel fuel and will help keep it in place. Careful with the chips/sawdust when you cut it off, they're just a volatile as the sap. The Toxin, Urushiol will be active for as long as a year in the dead wood and leaves. DO NOT BURN, the smoke contains the toxin, and can kill you if it gets in your lungs.
