It seems most of the time the people look sad. Those were hard times. We are spoiled.

They were told to be still for the photo which probably accounts for a general lack of joviality.

I would guess that in that time period with slow developing plates and lack of money you had to stand still for a long period fear was a factor

Could easily be, life was hard back then, and it's right after the Civil War ended.

My guess would be he lost his lower right arm in the CW.
