We’ve got a hot shower and a place to stay if you come up north swamp Thanks S94, but we are doing OK. Running 2 generators round the clock. AC in about half the house. We're cooking outside on a Blackstone griddle and a fish cooker....not going hungry at all. Wife fixed chicken and dumplings, stewed squash, purple hull peas, and fried cubed deer steak today for dinner. We've fed about half the neighbors so far. We have water (Thank God!)...with the big generator hooked to our water system. Insurance adjuster supposed to be here this coming week, so I've haven't cleaned up any debris other than what it took to get in and out of the house. Dont know when we'll get power back as such h a large area (about 30 or 40 miles wide) is torn up. And now another tropical depression is building in EXACTLY the same area as Helene did.....

Sadly the Federal response is very weak so far, probably because of both Georgia and Florida have Republican governors, who biden/harris despise. Hopefully people can get the help they need to rebuild.
Keith No FEMA people to be found down here. I've also been 25 miles into north central Florida....no FEMA there yet either.

Seems irresponsible after years of hurricanes, the lingering effects and the advanced warnings, that people still don't stock some essentials like extra propane tanks, gasoline, non perishable food, etc......I understand the region is devastated but sheesh, a state employee that works out of his truck doesn't have a few cans of spare gas? Sure he does.....but his home is damaged and his wife and two small kids are using that gas (that he paid for) to run their generator while the state requires him to go out and cut trees out of roads. Have you ever worked for state government?

Keith You would think now would be the time to buy votes? Jump in play the hero and get the votes. But that assumes they actually know how to.

I can only imagine the write up for "unsecured flammable liquid" in the back of a pick up. Probably some bottom feeder rules against that sort of thing.

North Carolina is wiped out in spots, be years before they get all those roads rebuit and no telling what the cost. Several people still stranded up in the mtn's. can't get out, all roads washed away going in or out. Never seen such destruction that far away from where one came on shore.

National Hurricane Center missed the forecast path by 60 to 75 miles at landfall. They didn't even get it right after it made landfall. They predicted a due north movement from Tallahassee to Thomasville, Albany, Atlanta...straight up the state.
It actually came in just below Perry, FL, centered Perry, then centered Valdosta, Ga, then Hazlehurst/Vidalia, Ga, then Augusta, Ga...on up. All the while NHC stuck with the more western track....even as they had to be watching the eye track perfectly northeast. Over 200 miles away by then from their crappy forecast.
I've never seen a forecast so wrong and all news outlets I saw repeated their bogus crap except for WCTV out of Tallahassee, FL. They nailed it exactly.
People died because of that turd NHC forecast.

People died because of that turd NHC forecast. I was expecting a cat 1 or 2 here according to all the weather wizards and it passed well east of here. Been through several over the years passing through central Alabama. This one was a nothing burger in the path they called out and as you said those in the actual path paid for it. They better make this right.

Yeah, a lot of folks over Swamps way weren’t “prepared” because they weren’t supposed to be hit. We were about as prepared as could be, but that same devastation would’ve been here and not there. We have plenty of food, gas, and propane for the next one. Kinda odd. Living in the New England area , if you are prepared you have things on hand for the occasional NorEaster , food , fuel etc. I quizzed a friend who lives in Florida about the craziness of people fighting over the last sheet of plywood at home depot as a storm is bearing down. If I lived there , I would have a piece of plywood cut and labeled for each window/door ready to go for an incoming storm at all times. I asked him why people there didn't do that. He told me that some did but others would use those dedicated pieces of plywood to build stuff forgetting that they would need them in a crisis. Just dumb if you ask me. Makes about as much sense as me throwing away my snow shovels after a hard winter.

It's a little hard to prepare for your house being destroyed or made unliveable with a room or roof being torn off or crushed. But, hey....maybe your snow shovel wouldn't get damaged.
A few sheets of plywood saved up to put over the windows won't help much. This community is 70 miles from the Gulf...btw.
A stock of food and some fuel is great to have on hand, but that's only gonna get ya thru if your home is liveable or the power stays off for just a few days. Currently, the closes gas station that has power to pump gas is 25 miles from me. I'm using about 10 gallons +/- in 24 hours.
We keep hearing that we won't have power here for 3 weeks. If that's the case, gonna cost me a few dollars to stay a little cool, have some lighting, and charge the phones.
I will say this. My home will have a generator (big enough to run my entire house) and a switch wired in ready for it.
We're blessed in this small town with a water system that is up and running. And short of the home being destroyed, it is just a generator/fuel/ no power issue for us.
There are many others over a huge area a lot worse off than me. We'll make it, but I will change some things...hopefully b4 the next one.
But, I dont really need precut plywood over my windows...if the roof blows off.

Our local state highway department sheds have their own fuel depot. I have seen troopers and wardens alike use it to fuel their vehicles. One of the local convenience stores has a back up generator in case of power outages.
