I like the screen to seperate the bait. Might get a little theft from mice but they get caught and go on top of the beaver chunks. Frozen beaver cuts nice on the bandsaw and it’s easy to slide a piece between the screen in cold weather. And it’s cold here!

I vacuum seal 25 or 50 to a bag and they keep for a long time

Sask . . good post, thanks for the pics. Slots in the sides to hold the screen in place is a nice touch.

WCS sells weasel boxes with a screen in them. About $15 a box. I bought 2.

I've started doing this but quit using a flagging system as I find I prefer something simpler. The more complex things get, the more things can go wrong.

Agree. I try not to overthink.

Interesting.

Indeed, there is certainly merit in keeping things simple on the trapline to achieve success. Gerald Schmitt comes to mind as a master minker with a simple set repeated thousands of times.

However, there is certainly something to be said about creativity on the trapline. When one applies new techniques or variations in old techniques that results in an increase in the catch rate . . . it warms one's heart.

I'm always thinking about tinkering with sets. Always. And I listen to what others have to offer that might apply to my trapline. Experimentation and application.

If adding a screen to a weasel box keeps the bait from being eaten by mice, that might increase the catch rate of the target weasel. If flagging a box allows me to scan a row of weasel boxes along the edge of a marsh with a pair of binoculars, that will save me time. More time available equals more weasel boxes set.

That's what I do. It's worked quite well over the last 50+ years of trapping. .
