If Covid didn’t make people realize we outsource way too much in this country, this thing should. Hopefully stretching their neck out with such demands will motivate folks to start making stuff here. Should they be successful in this attempted extortion, the cost of shipping goods won’t make them cheap anymore. Americans should be able to compete making stuff here. Hope the strike lasts at least that long

me too hobbie. the biggest without a doubt hole in our national defense is the inability to produce almost any essentials.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

First time I've heard of a union demanding a guarantee against automation in a contract. Companies would be insane to give em that. Let em walk around with their signs while robots get installed. It's the future in a lot of companies. There's no lazy machines. That was the main holdout for the screen writers guild strike.

I was reading something about this and it's origin
since 2020 the cost of shipping has gone up something like 300% they see the port charging that much more so they want a raise to get their peice of the pie
I can't say I blame them for wanting a raise
not sure when their last contract started but say it was January of 2020 they have seen around 30% inflation and if they figure it keeps going asking for 77% over 5 years knowing that it will be countered and they might actually see 45% , hard to blame someone for not wanting to work for less than the year before because they make 3% more each year and inflation is 7-9% more a year
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When the liberal kids realized I was prepping they said "When it happens, we are moving in with you.
That's when I realized what I was doing was an impossibility.
My plan, now, is to take what I need from the enemy, or whoever.

here is a way I like to figure things , I have an employee who does some essential task I want them to live within 20 minutes of work , I think of this as a town/city so why wouldn't I want the employee to live in the same town/city they serve.
so I go house shopping on mls I want a decent little 3 bed 2 bath house nothing fancy but a place you can raise a family.
say that house is 200K divide by 3 that should be the salary of someone doing an essential task so that he can afford to live where he/she is providing this essential service . 66K when they get past 5 years and take on training rolls and such they need some more so that they don't up and leave to a municipality that pays a bunch more. we ran into that cities and counties within driving distance started offering more money and buying out employees right out from us
that is my formula , it is simple but it gets you looking in the right place to get started with reasonable.
so now what is the price of a 3 bed 2 bath basic house within 20 minutes of the port?

Believe they were OFFERED 50% and refused. Fire and replace. "Employer Actions During a Strike Employers cannot fire striking workers solely for participating in a lawful strike. However, employers can: Hire permanent replacement workers to fill the positions of striking workers (although this may be subject to collective bargaining agreements). Implement a lockout, temporarily withholding employment or denying work to union members during a labor dispute, if the union refuses to meet the employer’s conditions."

In my union we just get a few dollars raise but next year 3 whole dollars raise. Time to strike!

We have become a country of people who care only of themselves and how much they can accumulate personally. They care nothing about anyone else. We need to figure out how Sr Citizens can go on strike and cripple the country.
