I hope they get the 77% they are asking for. Please explain why. The cheap crap being shipped in won’t be so cheap. Opportunities will be created here to make products competitively. Buying American made may even be a real thing again. I do see the shippers side of it. Someone commented they are making 300% more shipping however, they are taking all the risk. Thanks to Pirates, insurance rates are through the roof not to mention the fuel costs for taking routes to avoid them. Things aren’t always as they seem.

Senior Citizens deserve a 77% increase in SS then. Right? Stop it Gary! My wages haven’t gone up by 77% since covid. Now you’re saying your’s didn’t either? I’m gonna strike too. Let’s make our own union. Unions had a place when working conditions weren’t good. I think wages are under control now.

find a 3 bed 2 bath house within 20 minutes of the port in decent neighborhood , take what it would cost and divide by 3 that is about what they would need to make to afford that house.
it is going to change by port but 80K a year would be a 240K house
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

It would be a wonderful world if everybody lived 20 mins from their work, NOT! lol
A bunch of folks ‘round here drive an hour or better to the city to make city money to live better than average in rural America.
It’s all about choices.

I don’t pretend to know enough about the subject and am impartial relative to unions. My number 1 worry in all of this is it fast tracks more automation. I’m hopeful these men and women don’t price themselves out of jobs before the next contract down the line. Could go that way even without automation. If stuff starts being made here competitively those ships won’t be coming to ports, no ships, no need for dock workers.

In 78 the steel workers walked out on US Steel in Alabama. US Steel locked the doors and Birmingham and Jefferson County all but died.

I disagree. One huge factor that will prevent this is start up costs. The cost of permits, real estate, engineering, etc here makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to move production to the States and make the same profit. Not to mention the cost of adhering to EPA regulations. It will work the same as tariffs. You and I will pay it, the company's bottom line won't change.

WHY would anyone want to make anything here? When your workforce just unionizing and walks out the door leaving your company high and dry on a whim! If i know ahead of time a product is union made i'll pay triple for something else not union made, that's how much im against all these thugs!
Not my circus, not my clowns.

I'd fire all of the striking workers and hire a bunch of Mexicans to replace them. That's how you lower prices.
Maybe they could just carry the cheap junk across the border on their way in?

Curious what you do for a living B C? You could make this case for most any blue collar job. Not sure any of us would like what that would lead to in this country if you think this through.

Hard to be sympathetic for a union whose boss said he will " cripple" the US economy. Poor guy, I don't know how he makes ends meet, probably collecting aluminum cans to.afford the 7,100 sq ft mansion and the Bentley. On a measley $900,000/ year. Squeaky clean though! "Daggett, who has previously fought off federal accusations of Mafia connections, became the president of the International Longshoremen's Association in 2011. This position comes with a salary of $728,000 annually, along with an additional $173,000 from ILA-Local 1804-1. In 2005, he was accused of steering union benefits contracts to companies that gave kickbacks to organized crime during a Brooklyn trial, according to The Wall Street Journal. That same year, Daggett took the stand after federal prosecutors charged him and two others with racketeering. He portrayed himself as a target of the mob, despite testimony from a former Mafia member claiming that Daggett was a member of the Genovese crime family, The New York Times reported." Funny thing, one of the folks on trial disappeared. His remains were later found in a car trunk, in NJ. Probably banged his head, and passed out, trying to.unload groceries at the homeless shelter! And what are the odds, Daggert's son is doing right well too!

Tman Life Coach, part time farmer, lawyer, business owner and man of adventure. I don't make that case for any blue collar job. I make that case in response to any lazy and/or entitled American. I almost forgot.....I would also end ALL welfare (including unemployment "benefits"). It would cure a lot of laziness and entitlement.

They will all be out of a job soon. If I owned the ports, I'd take this opportunity to upgrade my automation at the ports. The Chinese already have one that is totally automated as a guide. The cheap stuff being imported is due to union workers pricing American businesses out of the market, hence all the manufacturing moved out of the country. But a union worker will never understand that. Spot on.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.
