I think pretty much all photos at that time were staged. They were rare enough that people dressed up and struck poses and such.
I've got a photo of my grandmother as a child sitting on the porch with the rest of her family. Her father is kind of standing off to the side with a big draft horse. It looks kind of odd, and the story is he insisted on having his favorite horse included in the photo.

Photos, in general, were a relatively rare commodity back in the day.
Everybody didn't have a cell phone back then. (and service was likely limited smile )

Everyone had to be perfectly still for the photo so all photos were staged.
