When my dads family came to the US as refugees in 1959 they had to have a sponsor before they could be approved refugee status. Why is it now the government providing cost of living to immigrants? Legal or illegal the government has never dolled hand outs to people wanting to come here. Why the change? The whole purpose of the former structure was to promote independence. Govt wouldn't let you in if you didn't have a sponsor, work, and pass the test. "DHS has announced processes through which nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and their immediate family members, may request to come to the United States in a safe and orderly way. Qualified beneficiaries who are outside the United States and lack U.S. entry documents may be considered, on a case-by-case basis, for advanced authorization to travel and a temporary period of parole for up to two years for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit. To participate, eligible beneficiaries must: Have a supporter in the United States; Undergo and clear robust security vetting; Meet other eligibility criteria; and Warrant a favorable exercise of discretion. Individuals participating in these processes must have a supporter in the United States who agrees to provide them with financial support for the duration of their parole in the United States. The first step in the process is for the U.S.-based supporter to file a Form I-134A, Online Request to be a Supporter and Declaration of Financial Support, with USCIS for each beneficiary they seek to support, including minor children. The U.S. government will then review the supporter information provided in the Form I-134A to ensure that they are able to financially support the beneficiaries they are agreeing to support." Individuals can sponsor alone or choose to do it with an organization, a group of people, a faith community, or an employer.
My guess is this is where it gets abused. This is where tax dollars go for sure.

More like nothing has changed. Same criteria today as 70 years ago.

Refugee program has changed. I believe the taxpayers fund that now. In 1959 there were not many handout programs period ( for U.S. citizens or immigrants). That I believe came with LBJ in the 60's

75 years ago, there was not a flood of illegals across the border. People would not have allowed that.

That I believe came with LBJ in the 60's Did any voters get to vote on that? It's the corrupt administrations that are allowing this to happen. Same as we have a candidate running for president , that never went through a primary. Just pushed along even though they have nothing to support our country, or even believe in our country's republic! Let alone the brains to make any sense with their babbling word salads.

I applied to FEMA for that $750 that Kamala said all of us in the disaster zone could get.
My cousin did also. He lives about 50 miles north of me.
Neither of us have ever applied for any .gov assistance in our lives....for anything.
We both included our wives on the application, we have no other dependents, and all of us are in our 50s. We only applied for loss of $$ for emergency needs, such as food and gas purchases. No home damage $$ was requested.
We applied just to give some useless FEMA office employee in Maryland something to do for about 30 minutes yesterday....sorta as a joke just to "check" the system.
I was notified today that I was denied because I have home insurance. Haven't heard from cuz, but I'm sure he was denied because he has home insurance too.
Wife says EVERYONE down here on FB that has applied has been denied.
Welcome to the USA!!!
