Anyone on here ever have a Toyota Land Cruiser? I'm looking at an older model one. Just curious to hear of anyone's experience with them. I've had a slew of Tacomas, some 4runners, and a Tundra.... but never a land cruiser.
Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

Landcruiser is to Tacoma, as Willys wagon is to Cherokee

One of my guys in Alaska had one, and he liked it. He called it a Land Crusher.
One of my co-workers in Michigan had one. He put a 350 in it and it ran great.
I think they were both early 70 models.

My tundra is back at the shop. They’ve had it two weeks now. They don’t want to believe the valve noise is from the lifters. They want to get an oil pressure reading when it happens. Problem is it does it for about five seconds. They had a problem with weak springs in the lifters allowing all the oil in the top of the engine to drain back to the oil pan. This is causing the dry lifter noise until the oil pressure builds again. Toyota is trying to tell me it’s ok for it to do that. I’m thinking the dry valves are shedding metal into the engine. The engine will self destruct. My chevys did this. That is why i went to Toyota. Now I find they have the same issue. At least my chevys lasted 68000 miles before they quit. Tundra has 18200 on it. Sorry to hijack your post but anyone buying a Toyota with a 5.7 engine needs to know.

I'm on my 2nd Tundra with the 5.7L. Lots of miles, no issues.
I've heard the valve noise a 5.7 makes compared to a sewing machine. LOL
Eh...wot?

It's a '93. We went and test drove it today. Was driving it (about a mile one way then back) and on the way back the oil light popped on so that has me pretty leery of it now. It's sure not lacking for power!

I’ve owned two a 1974 and a 1976. They were both outstanding off-road vehicles but not much for top end speed on The highway. They were both very rugged and dependable. The 76 I put rhino maxi tracks on an air shocks and it Would just about climb a tree. I once pulled a pick up about 500 feet down a dry wash in 2 Wheel Dr. before I realized that the pickup driver had lost control of the steering his steering tires had turned to the travel stop and had plowed two ditches. Put it in four wheel low popped out of the ditches I had dug with my tires, got his steering wheel, straightened out, pulled right on out the side of the wash. Two of the most fun vehicles I’ve ever owned.

They don't make a V-8 anymore due to forced compliance with Federal mileage mandates. The new V-6's are impressive on paper, more HP & torque than the big V-8. Right from the beginning I thought cramming that much power in a V-6 was going to be problematic. I was right.

The old FJ40's and FJ55's (wagon) are beasts. Will go anywhere. Seriously built for off road. Driving them on pavement at highway speeds tends to ruin them. Built for lower speeds on rough terrain. Thirsty , lucky if you get 12mpg. A bit prone to body rust. I call them Land Abusers.

Taking mine any distance it’s done by trailering. The short wheel base combined with good off road suspension doesn’t make the highway ride any better. From Montana down to MOAB and places farther south, it’s tough to find a place off road my cruiser can’t handle. When the “articulating” front wheels do their thing it’s crazy fun. As far as mileage, which came first, the Jerry Can or the Land Cruiser? Osky

Osky , Got one of these in the glove box ? 12 volt. Kinda rare , always goes missing. There is a small work lite that came in mine, different from the one shown in that it does not plug in it has clamps to be clamped on the battery terminals. I had my engine sent in to a well known builder of racing car engines and they worked some magic. I also had a major work over done on the ridiculous factory “smog” system it came with. Distributor was replaced with an electronic conversion to heat things up a bit. Fun rig. Rust is certainly enemy number one in those. I’m thinking soon of pulling mine apart again and either laminating the frame or having a new one made. Gotta do something with retired time. Osky
