Swamp two of my best friends are retired game wardens. Kool folks full of knoweledge. Worked hand in hand with many on damage complaints. Next is a retired police lt. Another good guy. Not the typical little ego maniacs. Law enforcement choose who they are. Youre kool in my book.

I've always said that cops should have to wait at least 2 years after the academy for field work. Most are worse than young bulls when they get out!

My brother who was a psyche major once told me that the testing has shown that the mental traits of both cops and criminals is almost identical. Living on the edge and for the thrill of the chase.

Most I have delt with have been ok. Especially when they are doing educational things with the kids . But in the field they all seemed to be looking for something to pin on me. I guess it's their job but I don't like being looked at like I'm a criminal. But things always go smooth and the older I get the cooler they seem to be.

Had one thet was at least 50 and 5'2" with barny Fith mentality to a T come out to give me a road kill tag on a small buck someone else hit . It was flopping its neck around so I got out and shot it before he got there over an hour later( would have not bothered had I know how long it would be would have shot it and drove off) He got ther gave me the 3rd degree. wanted to know what I shot it with see my permit then he tells me he would have skinned it looking for damage to it but saw a spot or 2 on its neck boogered up so I was OK. I said you only need to see the busted pieces of turn singles in the road beside it to know it was hit . He tries to act like he noticed that but clearly didn't. I told him I would gladly wait for him to skin it if it makes him feel better I just live a half mile down the road you can use my gear. I was disappointed when he declined.
He tried to tell me not to shoot them and wait for him to get there. I don't think he was prepared for someone to respond with back bone. Just told him there is no way I'm ever going to let an animal flop and suffer waiting for a CO to show up. And pointed out it took him over an hour and he has a large area to cover it could be much longer
.

I have way more good to say about wardens than bad. Only met one that was a complete jerk. Known a couple that trapped.

We have had both good and questionable. Ike Ashby was our warden when I was a kid. He was basically ran off when he was found trespassing on private ground during turkey season. There is more to the story but it was what I was told.

Most of the ones since have been straight out of the academy and act as such. The lack of soft skills is a plague on the department. The everyone is a criminal attitude does the department no justice.

I know several retired brown-shirt troopers (Fish and Wildlife Protection) from Alaska. They are no different than they were when they were working. The good guys are still good guys; the bad one's haven't changed a bit.

We have a retired game warden in Oregon who was and remains a trapper. NewHouse114 and I used to joke that we had our own local version of McManus' "Sneed". He is now in his 70's having retired when he was 50 something and works tirelessly to defend our trapping rights in Oregon. Stand up guy!

(Plus he sure made me a better trapper back in the day when he taught me that the trapping regs are the law...not merely suggestions)! wink
