This is his second go with a porky. I doubt it would teach him anything if I hurt him more than I had to yanking the quills.

This dog has an insane prey-drive. When he gets whiff of bird he locks on like a heat-seeking missile and very little will stop him until he flushes that bird. He routinely hunts himself bloody and seems impervious to pain when hunting.

When the porky slapped him he came out of the thick stuff, pawed at his snout a few times and wanted to start hunting again. He was more annoyed because I made him stop to pull the quills than he was with the tail-slap. He hunted back to the truck with the two deep ones still stuck in his nose.

Ever since he was a pup:

Geez! Do your grouse live in Green Briar or something? That old dog is flat tore up!

I have nothing clever to put here.

We always like to sedate and really go over the dog to find even the tiniest quills. They can imbed and eventually find their way into the bloodstream and cause big time problems. Love our hunting dogs so much! They have a great life and they work hard. Some of our favorite patients!

Yes, green briar, multi flora rose, blackberry bramble, thorn apple…the grouse love hanging out in all the thick, nasty stuff.

Eh...wot?

I know the quills can migrate. I have successfully removed quills from most of my dogs at one time or another. As I said above though, I do take them to the vet when there are too many or they are in too deep.

Eh...wot?

Some dogs it just makes them go after them harder, my old hound was such a dog, the first one he was just curious and got several quills for his curiosity after that it was game on by the third one he wasn’t getting stuck anymore and had become an expert at killing them

Frankly there is just something about porkies that gets dogs excited IDK if it’s the smell or maybe how they look and move or the sound their quills make but it’s something

This. I have caught a few bobcats that had tangled with porkys and had multiple pieces of quills just under their skin on their forelegs. It's best to remove quills quickly and make sure you get every one.
