Friend's granddaughter got her a nice buck on one of my leases a few days ago. This was only her 2nd deer ever. He entire family hunts deer with dogs but she likes the quietness and serenity of sitting in a stand. So, she has been hunting my local 400 acre lease. Her mother has been sitting with her. She thought I would be upset that she took a smaller buck and was apprehensive about bringing the deer by to show me. She was in tears when she realized I was more happy than her. I'm proud of her.

Good for her Swamp and good for you. We sometimes (often?) get too hung up on a deers rack size rather than the hunt itself. Hunters have been discouraged and ruined by people chasing inches of antler. I like to shoot a mature deer as much as most people but I think that as long as it is legal, you can shoot whatever makes you happy. That is what freedom is all about. Freedom to kill whatever deer you want. Freedom to trap $1.00 raccoons. Along with a responsibility to keep our thoughts to ourself if someone chooses to do something different than we do.
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Sarge She had hunted about 5 or 6 times so far this season..some mornings....some evenings. This was an evening hunt. She was in a tower-type stand looking down a food plot about 100yds long but only about 25 yds wide. Two bucks came out into plot just b4 sundown and began sparring. This buck was the bigger of the two. She shot her .308 Browning BAR at about 70 yds. Buck exited the plot but only made it about 30 yds into the swampy woods.

That’s great. Good for her!! Trophy is in the eyes and mind of the hunter. Deer I killed last year was no where near my biggest. But it was my first one I’ve killed on my own land. I’ll remember it like it was a record book buck. That's got to be a special feeling...on your own land. Congrats on the land! I'm too old to ever realize that satisfaction, but I'm fortunate to lease tracts that I can manage as my own (except for the timber harvesting.)
