That particular batch is venison based.

This year I'm going to add fresh pork to the menu along with a few other flavors and see how they produce.

What have you had good success with where you're at Shark?

I often wonder if there is a major shift in bait preference from one area or state to another like you find with many lures.

I trap Southeast Texas and I use a wide verity of baits. Mouse musk oil (my favorite summer liquid bait!), Time of Death ( mouse meat base) Hiawatha Valley, Powder River. I also use a lot of deer leg and hide sets. I have not found a commercial bait that can out preform a staked down deer leg in the middle of a 2 track with a mafia set. Yotes just can’t pass up a deer leg.

That’s interesting Shark.

Adult coyotes around here want nothing to do with toy-type sets. You might pick up a juvenile or two if you’re lucky, but that’s about it.

The aversion here doesn’t come from extensive use of that set as much as they are just not interested in the offering.
I believe an adult coyote in a resource rich environment knows there is little food value in a piece of hide or lower leg bone.
That makes it more of a curiosity set that has very little if any holding power.
In that instance, a shot of urine or other mark at the set would make it much more attractive than a standalone I believe.

The toy sets might do better than your commercial baits simply because they don’t have a bunch of extra ingredients added.
That essentially makes them as much a lure as they are bait. They might avoid those products just because they recognize the additional smells.

You should try your hand at making a batch of fresh bait. I think you will be more than a little surprised at the results.

I don’t disagree with that. I do however add a shot of coyote or fox urine and I cover a bit to imitate a cat or coyote has hid it. If I don’t catch in a week I’ll freshen things up with a little bait and urine. Most times I’ll catch with just a leg. I stake them down and they definitely try to leave with them but in the struggle to pull the leg they find one of those 550’s inevitably.

Im going to give bait making a try. One thing I would like to try is grinding up an entire deer gut pile. The goal is to capture the smell of a gut shot deer. In our area a gut shot deer hardly ever last overnight before the coyotes are on him. I’ve heard of this being done before with great results.

Here is our first buck to hit the ground in South Texas.

This bow kill was shot in ninety degree temps with a thirty-five mph wind.

The buck field dressed just shy of two hundred pounds at seven years old.

What does the T-Man Crew think this old typical twelve point scored?

Mid 80s. Nice buck. Any exotics in your area? Not sure where you are at Tejas but just a few years back we would make a few trips to the brush country. We hunted Pearsall and even down to Falfurris. You never know what will step out of that thick brush or crawl out.

Some good guesses from the T-Man Crew.

The buck taped out at 196 and change.

Lefty, that boar was around 200 pounds.

He had a date with the coyotes and birds.

Now he could use a sandwich.
