Looking good Boco! I'm going to get going here pretty soon myself after the torrential rains subside a bit and the rivers start coming down.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Crappy trapping weather again today, above freezing and drizzle.
Wont be any fur moving until we get good sustained cold and some snow.
I got several beaver houses scoped out for some under ice snare poles, dont know when we will have good ice.

Raining here today again.
Still waiting to set out a decent line.
The dispersal of marten where I have my 12 boxes set now will soon peter out, need snow and cold to access some more remote territory.

Here is a pic of a walkthru jackpot combination set.
Basically a walk thru with opening at each end(with snares),a couple snares on each side and some snares set outside the pen where cats will circle before comitting.
When I am able to get into more ground I will take a pic of a true jackpot with snares on 3 sides and the north end open.

[Linked Image]

This specific set has hammered a lot of cats.
The big stick in front of the bait is on the ground, not above the snare(it sort of looks like that in the pic).It serves no purpose.

Make sure you construct your jackpots where the cats are.Either near a pocket where they hunt or on the travelway they use to move between hunting pockets.

After the snow comes look for and follow some cat tracks. They leave very different sign when they are hunting than the sign they leave on the travel routes they use between where they hunt.

Thank you Boco, that is much appreciated. The skiff of snow we had for a couple days around the 12 th -13th, I had tracks near one of my pens , they didn’t get terribly close however, today I noticed scat near where I had a cd hanging. Hard to read sign in this weather but I’ve been blending in snares on some of the fainter trails in the area. With my background trapping in Southern Ontario I realize I’m hesitant to set directly on trails, (4 wheeler, walking trails) I’m a little paranoid when it comes to that, setting at home, mostly on 100 acre lots , I tend to set the back of those acreages , as far from roads as I can get. My pens are probably too far off trail .

Maybe you will have a season if enough incidentals are turned in Bruce.
Do you have a strong state trapping organization with high percentage of trappers as members for political weight?

Mr Boco, can you please gives some details about what the difference in sign is that you notice between hunting and traveling?

Lynx when hunting in a pocket of hares will leave tracks criss crossing back and forth.Lynx often hunt in family groups, and will hang around a pocket of hares for a few days till they thin them out. There will be old and fresh tracks mixed in.
Lynx travelling between pockets of hares will travel in a straight line, perhaps wandering a little here and there, but a definite directional travel
Lynx know where all the good spots are that hold hares and check them all out on a regular basis.
In my area the hare pockets can be several kilometers apart and some better areas that have more hares will hold the lynx longer before they move on.

The walkthru jackpot strikes again.Medium sized cat,two snares both on his neck-lights out.
Thought I would check today since we had a wet snowstorm last night and the predators would be out hunting.
Picked up the cat,a marten and 4 weasels.

I had set a couple wolf snares in back of a marten box a couple weeks ago where I noticed a wolf was coming in on a trail A lone wolf with no other sign which is not uncommon before freeze up.
He came back and I snagged him.Good bait in a marten box is often a draw for canines and cats as well

Nice! Are the temps cold enough there or do you check your sets quite often? Last year was brutal for hot cold swings! I’m sure glad I didn’t wait until Saturday to board the wolf I got. I think it’s the best quality fur on a wolf I’ve ever got. 2 back toes are buggered and I’m not sure if I got the lips/cheeks split quite right on this one. That’s what I like about fur drop off day. I can look at what others did and fire off questions on put up.

I havent set any jackpot for wolf yet Jake, just hung a couple trail snares behind a marten box where I noticed a wolf marked(kickback) a couple weeks ago.I knew once he marked it he would be back.He is well furred so I skinned him complete when I got home yesterday, and put the hide in the freezer until it gets cold enough to frostscrape.
I am checking my 12 marten boxes which are close to home every second day or so until it gets cold enough to run more boxes further in on a 5 day check..
We got about a foot and a half of snow now and colder weather coming soon so will be able to get the ski doo out next week and set some more boxes and a good jackpot for wolf.
Going to a leaf game in TO monday.
The young lad flew down to TO yesterday and bought a new tesla.I think he likes it,says it goes from 0 to 90 in 4 seconds, lol.
