I have a remote cabin in SE (rain catchment system, generators, septic pipe runs out into the muskeg). I also have a place in central Alaska on the road system, still remote, but it has power and a well and a real septic system

[quote=Dirt]Living off the grid is not simpler. It is actually a very complicated life.

Yes, it requires A LOT of planning and forethought especially when your remote. Most people shop for a few days maybe even a week or so but try doing it for a six month time frame for a family of four. You forgot something? Oh well you'll have to make do or do without. I'll give my wife some props as we got down to the nitty gritty of rice and beans or beans and rice she was always able to make a feast out of very little. There's off grid and then there's waaaay off grid.

Our house is in the suburbs, but the hunting property is off grid. I have 800 watts of solar panels on top of my deer blind, and 3600 watts at the garage. I've got another 6kw of panels for when we build a cabin. Batteries are where the money is.

You folks from Alaska are true pioneers in my eyes. Even living remote there has a way different meaning than living remote here in the lower 48. A lot of difference.
