I think they'd be worn out before they'd pay for themselves.

I had a brief conversation with a solar panel sales rep awhile back. I've got stone coated steel shingles on my house, and told him there is no way I'd allow drilling holes in them for solar panels, but would be open to the idea of putting them on the ground. He wasn't much interested in that.
I can't be convinced that anchoring them to a roof is not going to cause leaks at some point.

I would if I was younger, not now as I'm too old. I would have ground mounted the panels though. Not messing up my roof for it.

I built an off grid "cabin" for a wealthy guy from Chicago last year... 1.3 miles past electric. The solar co we got out of Rhinelander didn't mount on the roof, he preferred a set of pedestals. Snow up here would have kept them covered most of the winter anyway. Now the snowplow guy sweeps them off with a special tool when he comes

Solar guys here are also pushing roof mounts, they must get an extra subsidy or something for residential roof mounts

Small load off grid stuff, heck yea! Home….never. Solar isn’t in our interest up here like it is in southern sunny states

I put them on the ground, they run a heat pump in the winter and the house in the summer, I don't have a "roof" I live in a hole in the ground!
