Figure out the cost first. Fuel will eat the fur check for breakfast. On horseback ya might be able to come out ahead a bit. It would not be very fun though. Good luck.

If you enjoy trapping coons, go do it. Get what return out of them that you can and enjoy the time and experience!

Get a part time job at McDonald's and a part time job mining crypto, then next year buy a solar panel and a Tesla and you can trap without buying fuel. After the cotton farmers go broke fur and coon prices will go sky high. By that time the U.S. and Russia will be friends again and they will buy all the coons you can catch!

Or you could feed cows and run a few traps and get some experience doing what you like.

NTO---if you look back in the archives there are likely threads from the last decade of coon trappers in the golden triangle catching thousands a year. You don't see those guys posting anymore for the most part. That speaks volumes to the coon market and how little profit is available particularly in light of recently inflated expenses.

If you are watching Facebook there are some frequent posts coming up with folks coon trapping in places like Iowa. Many of those folks, even the ones with experience behind them, are doing good to make much beyond expenses. Instead some are following a business model that essentially developed after the market bust in '87 and its based on revenue generation from things like sales of lure or lessons, creating attendance at convention demos, clicks on youtube. Follows on places like Facebook are just an extension. For those folks thats been a primary money generator in the lower 48 for a long time now with the exception of a few short upward bursts in fur value, the adc market and specialty garment production direct to consumers. But most of them have trapping in their blood so they set up lines even in depressed markets to fuel the passion and try to hit locations where the fur might turn a minor profit versus having no value.

Maybe there will be a fur market sometime in your future. In the meantime, go set some traps and try to have fun at it

I don't think you can turn a profit if you have to drive very far to set and check that many traps, plus factor in losses. Do it for the fun of it and the exercise.

My advice would be to gain experience, collect gear, and git access to plenty of ground so that when the market booms you are ready to take advantage of it.

Years ago my career was seasonal and the trapline kept us fed all winter.

There are a couple others pulling down big numbers too. They aren't just selling the hides and they are making a nice profit for their efforts.

That's a tough one to swallow!!!
170 per check, at 50 percent catch ratio, that's 340 sets, twelve hours a day roughly 32 traps an hour that's less than 2 minutes per trap that's baiting or blind? Setting set drive time.if he's not keeping the coon you still have to dispose of them in a proper manner and your making nothing, if you keep them you have to freeze in multiple freezers and ski what you can ect.
Oh, I forgot to ask how many guys were there?

Nate, Check out his youtube channel. They can trap the road right of ways, have a huge population of coon and work very hard at it. It's also being done by iowatrapper as well. These guys have many freezers to store all the coon. It's hard to believe the amount they catch but it's possible in those areas with that work ethic.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

That dude is an animal. Looks to be about 25 years young and ain’t carrying any extra body fat. Attends college too while he’s running his line. Switched over to more water sets this year. Think he’s up over 40 mink so far this year on top of the 1200 coon. He goes right from coon to beaver towards spring and catches2-300 hundred of them also. This fat old man would be pukin after the first 30 times up and down those steep creek banks. Would be nice to be 45 years younger and have that drive.
I’m running about 80 or so DPs and it’s about to put me in a wheelchair. What a man won’t do for a little entertainment.
