I was liking the mb650 last couple years I trapped around Nome. Strong and very little room to chew.

It never really holds the foot. But what do i know? I use No. 9's. The State of Oregon game Department had the same issues trying catch and hold Mt. Lions. As far as i know they use No. 9's now. One trapper's complaint in Oregon was, It would also hold black bears. 4cents worth (because of Biden nomices) laugh

Interesting, the one guy I used to talk to (because I would run into him out there trapping and hunting lions whenever I was in the area bobcat hunting) claimed the Sterling 800s were his favorite trap for them. He was not a big fan of the #9s. Personally I've never used a Sterling 800 but have heard good things about them. I have some 9s though and like them very well for a deep snow trap, just watch the nontargets, they are very good at hanging on to anything that steps in them, including hooves.

I also like the #9's a lot, they're an awesome trap. I'm just interested in trying different stuff. I used to exclusively trap marten in boxes with #120's and #155's, this year I'm only running a few boxes, 90% of my marten sets are a running pole with a #1 or #1.5 longspring this year, just because I wanted to try it out. Not that my marten sets have anything to do with my selection of big footholds, just saying I'm experimenting for the sake of fun and to break up the monotony.

Guess I should have clarified my offset vs closed jaw question was for wolverines. We don't get to trap them down here, didn't know if they could pull out of an offset or not.

I have caught two in #3 offsets and they were not able to pull out at all. Caught one in an MB750 offset and it wasn't able to pull out either. Can't remember if the #9 was offset or not but I think it had standard jaws and held that wolverine. Only one I have had slip out of a foothold was a #4 longspring with standard jaws that had the wolverine by one toe, it cut the skin clean through all the way around the toe and I was left with the avulsed skin and toe nail.

I would argue that for most animals, closed vs. offset jaws is more about how we each personally feel about using either one. I tend to lean towards offset for trapping on land, I'd rather have the room for the levers/springs to come up higher. That said, I use plenty of closed jaws on land too, I run what I brung. Maybe I'm wrong, there's many guys out there smarter than me who have trapped more winters than I've seen.
