Zarembo Island just a few miles from Wrangell.
I heard rumors that the total cost of the tree was over a million dollars from start to finish. I know of where the team got lodging while in Wrangell, and apparently they where there on a few occasions over the past year. What a dream job.

I grew up in a series of logging camps in SE Alaska. Still cut timber there most of the year, I winter near Talkeetna because I love snow and ice, and we don't get much in southeast.

The US can still have a tree, just doesn't have to be at a cost of over a million dollars. If your checkbook was over drawn by 10 Grand would you spend a 100 bucks on a tree? We as a country have to get beyond the old " it's only a million dollars, just a drop in the bucket".

And that's why city and state parks will be full of little stumps come Jan!

More gov. Corruption. For a $200 I’ll cut and sell them a 50’ balsam fir every year from my property. And my cousin will truck it there on his semi for 4 or 5 thousand dollars.

I realize the cost is ridiculous...but I gotta say as a SE Alaska guy, it's cool to know there will be a singular Sitka Spruce on the East Coast for a while lol

As a tax payer from SD I think it would be cool to spend less than what we take in.

I agree with that, but to get a Christmas tree from all the different states at some point in time is worth the cost compared to a lot of other “fat”. IMO. Happy trapping! ScottW

I agree with where you're coming from, personally I think most 3 letter agencies should be shut down and their assets liquidated and put back in the treasury. But that's a topic for another time, this is about the capitol displaying a tree from a different national forest every year, which the Tongass is one of...

Some people just don't get it, no wonder we are in the shape we're in.

Oh I get it, I just think there's trillions we could/should be generating and hanging onto elsewhere, so the cost of the national Christmas tree shouldn't have to be part of the conversation. If the forest circus actually logged instead of letting everything light on fire and spending hundreds of millions a year on fighting fire, there would be many billions in timber sale revenue every year...that's a start. If people would quit flipping out over a tiny hole in the ground, the Arctic has a literal sea of oil under it that I'm certain Conoco Phillips would pay handsomely for...but the Christmas tree is the problem, you're right.

so let’s say for example we were not in debt as a nation and the annual or bi-annual budget was a million in the black and this tree was being used……would you still be completely opposed to it? I’m just curious as it kind of a principle and priority thing for me and I can think of way worse ways to spend. And I think we can all admit, this tree is an anomaly and probably the most expensive one ever likely to be unmatched until the next one from AK years down the road. Happy trapping! ScottW

Oh I didn't see where you're from, sorry about that. I understand more now. This isn't a budget thing, you're a little mad because they didn't come harvest a south dakota telephone pole for the national Christmas tree. That is the most common tree in the Dakota's isn't it?

Lol. That's a good one. I haven't personally been east of Missoula, MT. I do have some cousins in ND and they said the state tree is a telephone pole, and you can watch your dog run away for 3 days it's so flat lol

I cut a cedar tree every year as our Christmas tree not because we can't afford a nice store bought one but we do it as a family out of our pasture. Christmas is about family and christ . A million dollar tree doesn't seem to have anything to do with either.

I have always thought that those trees, no matter where they go, are a waste of a perfectly good tree. I would rather they stay in the woods and grow than them to be cut down and wasted.
