Here the story.
Wade's my youngest boy, the one in the wheelchair. He killed a big one 2 years ago but didn't hunt last year because it was his first year of college and he thought he better focus on school.
Dad talked him into coming home on the weekend to rifle hunt this year. I got a pasture we summer cows in 45 miles west of us (Leftys old stomping grounds). It's back up in the hills with just cover down in the draws. I knew there were deer back up in there as I ran some cams up there last year after season. I've only hunted up there once years ago but figured the deer up there don't get any pressure and feel pretty safe way back up in there.
So knowing he was coming home to hunt I went up there 2 weeks ago and scattered some corn in two spots and put up two cams.
We made it up there mid-day Saturday to check cams and hunt. First cam had a pretty nice 10 and 12 that he thought were shooters. When we checked second cam the first buck we saw was this drop tine buck. He said that's the one I'm shooting or he wasn't shooting. First evening he saw like 6 bucks but not the drop tine.
The deer had been real regular on camera the previous week. Today we get up there about 2 and there's a small buck at the corn when we get there. But I'm setting him up about 200 yds away right beside a dead cedar. I built him a shooting bench on one of his old chairs. So to get him into it without scaring the little buck I put him on my back and crawl on my hands and knees to the chair. I got him setup where he can just see over the hill enough to see the corn so the deer can't see us on our hands and knees. Wasn't pretty but I got him setup without spooking the little buck.
I left him to go set at other stand. I wanted to set with him and watch it if it happened but he's so independent he didn't want me there. Thought I'd mess it up for him. So I'm about a half mile away and he's texting all afternoon there deer coming and going but the drop tine hadn't showed up. About 445 I got a text deer down (my hearing the way it is I heard 2 faint shots but I can't tell what direction they came from). I knew if he'd shot it was the drop tine buck.
I walk out till I get good reception and call him. He said first shot was facing chest shot. He said deer stepped backed a couple steps and turned broad side he put the second in the back 3rd of the lungs. He lost sight of buck but thought he was hit hard.
I get over there and buck is dead right where it was standing at second shot he just can't see it because of grass and slight roll of hill. First shot took out about a third of the heart. But I'd told him if it's still standing there's nothing wrong with insurance.
His buck 2 years ago.
personally I'm to the point i enjoy the boys getting them more than getting them myself
The buck last year
