In my opinion, the stealth of not leaving tracks and sign had a lot more to do with being discovered.

This depended on where they were trapping of course as some areas had more friendly Indians than others. The Blackfeet were notorious for killing trappers on sight. But most of the bands were more than happy to steal traps and horses, and anything else useful, whenever the occasion arose. The trappers usually kept hiding during the day and set traps after dark, then pulled them before daylight. It was treacherous business not for the soft hearted.

True in every respect. Most trapping parties started to operate in groups of 3 or more, so there could be a watch posted while 1 or 2 were setting. Grizzly bears also killed/maimed a TON of the trappers.

But in the quotes above, not leaving tracks or scent is directly related to spooking/alarming the beaver.

K Snow, I didn't take offense at all. My respect for you probably increased as I also think it's important to document sources. I should have said that I believed or thought it probable that mountain men employed this tactic rather than state it as if it was fact.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
