I have lived among moose for nearly 4 decades, doing collaring, research, and hunting them. I am particularly impressed with the Alaska/Yukon subspecies, simply because they are so big.

The little Shiras moose of Idaho is no match for the Alaska/Yukon, but it is still substantial.

Some of the racks are pretty substantial.

Here's a moose 2 miles from our camp. I learned the first time. No more than 10 yards!

A calf mortality on the Susitna River showed over 80% mortality from grizzlies and wolves.

In winter, the little Shiras moose are in our yard.

One of the best parts of Alaska was the constant supply of moose meat along with salmon.

80% calf mortality due to bears and wolves but our DNR keeps saying wolves are not detrimental to recovering our moose population. MN wolves must not like moose

I like the big ones too, Jack. Their antlers fascinate me in art. I saw a documentary years ago of a naturalist who was also an artist in Russia. She would get closer to bulls than anyone I'd ever seen. She knew their behavior and read them almost to perfection. She would take photos of them and do portraits of them in oils. They were very good . I wish I could remember her name.

Those bulls were every bit as impressive as any on the North American continent.

I wonder if those moose are similar in type , to the ones here.

Thank you, Jack, for the share.

One spring morning at daylight at the place up northern MN we heard crazy bad from the far side of the lake. After breakfast Launched a canoe and we paddled over to find a dead cow just out of the water torn open in the rear and sign of a calf that was either being born when the wolves attacked or was torn out of her in the killing. I suspect she was down birthing when found by the pack. Wasn’t anything pretty about that big bloody area. Yup, those Minnesota wolves don’t care for moose meat.

Nice of her to come along and pack Coyle's moose. Hope she didn't stub a toe.

White17 I’m jealous!!! Not just because of the moose grin I’m hoping to come get a moose while I’m still young and dumb.

Please educate this ignorant hillbilly. Is the meat prized for flavor? Or is it something that's big that will feed a family for a while? What other meat does it compare to?

I’ve hunted them 16 times in Newfoundland. I go late….mid November , every year.

A species that is in real decline in southern Manitoba. From yearly signings 70 years ago to only once a decade viewing now.
