I’ve been mentoring a young man with trapping. He was with me when I set up some cat and wolf traps near where he coyote traps. At his invitation. He called me this afternoon to say he could see a cat in one of my traps when he was checking his coyote traps in the field above this road.

We had found a culvert under the field road at the upper end of a brushy draw with cat tracks at each end. The culvert is about 18” in diameter. I set each end with a trap. Both were attached to sound, four inch logs several feet long. And both traps still had their 10 foot drag chains on without the drags. The upper trap in the culvert had a fairly long chain to start with. The cat got in the upper trap by a front foot and was able to get all the way through to the other trap where he managed to get his tail in the trap. I’ve caught muskrats in foot traps by the tail and beaver in conibers by the tail but this is a first for me.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.
