I filled my last bobcat tag and pulled my traps yesterday. So I decided to share a few moments of the season with my T-man friends. I had 6 tags (Utah limit), My wife had two tags and my son had a couple. [Linked Image]
Most of my sets are walkthru sets with several scents and visual attractors. This one is along a road where I was worried about theft so I didn't use the visuals. I caught a cougar here a few years ago.

A more typical walkthru with polyfill visuals. The last tree on a rock point with cattle trails. A big wash and sagebrush flat behind me.

The first cat of the season. My wife was on her lunch break from work - at least she changed out of her high heels. I doubt any other women harvested a cat wearing a dress this year (and it wasn't her first time) LOL. Notice the remade walkthru to her right.

This trap is attached to one of my "rock"s. It's concrete I poured in a hole and buried half of a short length of chain in. I have them placed in rocky locations where stakes don't work and a conventional drag wouldn't hang up on anything for a long long ways.

My son Nathan and his daughter June came with me on this day. Like many days, the traps were all empty. But we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather and all of God's creation. There are many unusual and breathtaking rock formations in this area.

Checking traps while wearing a dress, and being a woman to boot… why I never….

Great pics Dan! You sure get some some color variety in the cats in that area.

Great pictures and beautiful country
Those rock formations are amazing, I would have a hard time trapping if I had rocks like that too explore

Another nice tom.
[Linked Image]
I broke out some 3 and 4 longsprings to use in exposed trap sets for a change (thanks for the reminder how effective and fun they are Boone Lain).[Linked Image]
This shot shows the raspy patch on their tongue they use to lick the hair off prey (feel it sometime).
[Linked Image]
The remake.
[Linked Image]
I use a little flea spray and bag them. Then 20-30 minutes later I like to skin them and harvest the glands. It's nicer to skin them warm before rigormortis stiffens them up.

Sets in dry culverts can be productive. Cats and grey fox will go thru them and will check them for rabbits.
[Linked Image]
I've had very good luck on cats in this culvert.

My last cat of the season. A nice tom. It's bitter sweet to fill the last tag and pull the line. But now I'll have time to do a little ice fishing.[Linked Image]

Dan, Thanks for posting these great pictures. I was nearly as impressed with the fine animal and landscape pictures as I was with your beautiful family. Your grand daughter's a sweetheart. How many grandkids you got?

My son Nate has three daughters. June is the oldest. My daughter has no children yet - we're hoping still. Grandkids are awesome. Thanks for the complement.

I had a couple questions about my concrete "rock" drag. So here's what the bottoms look like. I quick-link my trap to them. They can be pre-baited by digging a hole and putting grain and bedding material (cotton, polyfill or wool) in the hole then putting the "rock" over the hole. Mice will soon find and occupy them. Or you can just smear bait or lure in the pocket and set the trap in front of the tunnel.

I had left this one beside a trail where I had last caught a coyote with it in a blind set.

To make the set that caught this cat,I attached my trap and turned the "rock"on edge and propped it against another rock (so it was more of a side blocker and not a comfortable place to step). I then made a heavily guided walkthru right on the trail with scent and polyfill on either side on little dead brush I moved in.

Good to see you out there doing your thing, Dan. First pic of the badger, I noticed a little “ring around the collar” on him! Nice job with a bunch of cats for a nice payday, and great pics of a trapping family! Take care my friend.

Awesome stuff!!

To do a 2-3 week bcat line out in West River some winter is on my bucket list. Maybe the Jan of 2027 wink

Do you all in Utah have to surrender your carcasses to the state guys? We have to here but I think a person can get them back if you request it.

No the carcass is yours, just have to come in and submit a tooth pull, same on lions, lions changed this year to just getting a permit and bring them in for an aging pull, depending on where you are at, no limits yet !

Bobcat tags seem to change every year in this state though, crazy as every one around us has no limits I'm aware of !

That would be awesome. Seems a little difficult to become a non res trapper.
What happens if you catch over your limit? You're using mostly legholds so you can release what you can't keep? Ever get cold enough to freeze a foot?

Furharvester education is required, then you just buy a nonresident license, and bobcat tags when they are open for sale in October. A frozen foot is possible depending on conditions. If we fill our last tag and catch another it must be released, regardless. So it's a mad scramble to pull traps at the end.
