Happy New Year James

Looks like a fine lunch to me, bet it was delicious

Our deer season ends this weekend and I am shifting into pig trapping gear.
If I catch some small ones I am going to follow your lead

I’ve been trying to get photos of this buck for quite a while. He suffered a substantial fighting injury late last season.
His right ear drooping is a direct result of the injury. He is down antler-wise from the last two seasons.
Hopefully he will make a rebound next year as a seven year old.

Here is a good buck that was recently taken.

He has one heck of a frame.

Anybody care to make a guess on what he scored ?

Even with good photos it is hard to judge some deer..

He had 27 & 28 inch main beams, and a inside spread just over 25.

When the tines have a curve to them they are usually longer than they appear..

Two tines were over 12 inches, and one was over 11..

The old buck scored 193 and change..

Yep he fooled me,when I got home from the hockey game I took more time and looked at the second picture and saw more than I did the first quick look.I still would have been off,my guess would have been 188",but it's always fun to guess normally I can guess with 5" or less.I know my friends always ask me to score picture's of deer and can't get over how close most of my guesses are.

Tony, you and Rick have a good eye for judging.

I thought that buck might throw folks off a bit.

In the future I will pick the contestants a little more carefully in an attempt to try and keep you guys on your toes.

Bring the "Whack or Walk Wednesday" wink

I always enjoyed those threads
Still not great at judging age but better because of those threads smile

(From another forum James used to spend a lot of time on for those wondering what I am talking about)

That series was really fun, and turned out to be pretty popular BT.

Those were the good ol’ days before they changed up the format.

The general mindset here is quite a bit different from there.

I think WHACK would win out no matter what was posted.

I tried my best to make those threads informative just like the T-Man Coyote Thread.

Here are a few questions I think would be of great interest to the T-Man Coyote Trappers.

Hopefully some of the coyote killers will take a few seconds to share their thoughts on the subject.

What do you think are the most important contributing factors when it comes to First Night Catches?

Is it a combination of things, or is there just one primary aspect you focus on?

How does your first night catch ratio compare to your overall catch?

First night catches are a combination of things, I don't feel it comes down to one primary aspect. It will vary from one area to another. I don't get hung up on first night catches. I would say 5% of my catches happen the first night.

I have had very few first night catches

But I think it has a lot to do with scent control, blending and lure and/or bait choices.
I think your scent keeps them away until it dissipates, blending hides the trap when they are already amped up and the strangeness of the scent used

Of course having the location and a participant goes without saying

Coyotes being there the first night seems to be my number one factor! Last year I was hung up on not getting many first night catches. Or second night, or third night, etc. Then, I put a couple traps on a drainage going out of field. Previously I had only trapped the top end. Lo and behold, I caught coyotes several nights including a first night catch. It finally clicked that the coyotes on top were coming from multiple different places and I had to wait for them to come by those sets with the wind right before they could have a chance of getting caught. Whereas the drainage at the bottom of the field was where they were all heading so they passed by nearly every night. There’s a place I just set that’s a long road between two fields. It was tore up with coyote sign when I set it 4ish days ago. I’ve caught two bobcats on that road and there is not a lick of coyote sign that has showed back up. So number one factor for me is location and having the traps where they are gonna be that night, not several nights later.
