I donate to our local food bank
The Boy Scouts in our area always put out flyers for donation dates but the last time they did that, they never picked up.

I donate to our local hunters for the hungry. Donated a bear and deer this year, it was processed and the meat was given to families in need in my local community. Eric I second this. I usually donate a few deer per year to Hunters for the Hungry. Michigan has a state-funded program and there are private programs if you sniff around a little bit. Our ag land is overrun with whitetail so it’s a great way to help manage the herd by knocking down a bunch of does and feeding the hungry by donating those same deer. Win-win.

Salvation Army last I knew used the highest percentage of your donations for what you intend it be used for. There are some that use as little as 4% of your donation to actually help people as opposed to paying salaries for employees, etc... Still is right at the top for money going to help what it was intended to do. Most of the large charities about 75 percent goes to administration costs. SA is a good place to do some charity giving.

I help out the church my Mother goes to I believe volunteering and lending a helping hand is more valuable than a cash donation
I agree. I look for opportunities to do it direct, then I know 100% goes where its intended. There's a young family at church that doesn't eat a lot of meat for financial reaons. We filled their freezer with venison a few weeks ago. Passed it off as our freezer being full due to me getting 4 deer this year. I helped someone else replace their water heater. Someone else with auto repairs. "charity" can make relationships weird, so try to position it as something else. Just pay attention to the people in your life who may be struggling financially. You'll pick up hints here and there on ways you can descreetly help. Do it right and it looks like you're just being a friend.

my recommendation , find the food pantries/banks around you and volunteer for an few hours.
you will learn about the issue, the real problems , the people and the organization.
Family Promise was a good organization , I used to cook for them regular , it housed women and families that were homeless and it did a lot of job coaching and life management so they wouldn't leave the shelter just to be back in a few months.
a significant number of people use food assistance and go to food banks because they do not know how to cook. We have failed to teach actual cooking , leaving so much up to marketing to sell easy.
rice is a very good example , how many people think cooking good rice is difficult? it isn't difficult at all , it takes about 30 minutes ,yet there are 5 to 1 products in the rice isle to simplify , what isn't difficult for more of your money.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

There is hunters for the hungry here too but most have EBT cards and get beef from the store. Most don't want deer. If you donate food, donate canned goods that kids can open and eat from the can. Otherwise most don't get used if it requires cooking. I was in Lions Club International and we had food drives every Christmas. I also hauled the trash in town and I saw where the food went that required preparation.

This I volunteered at our local food pantry for one week. The majority (not all) of the recipients were young couples with kids. The fat woman would come in with her fat kids while her fat husband would be leaning against their newer vehicle smoking a cigarette. This was during working hours while most businesses in our small town have help wanted signs. Not many older adults, they have too much pride to participate and many of them need the help. I no longer help out there and do not support the loafers dependency. Find an individual that is worthy of your help.

Find an individual that is worthy of your help I have no sympathy for the lazy, or drunks or dope fiends.
