I never venture that far south anymore, been years since i was on that river. This winter would of been a good one to trap it as dry as it's been. Out of 50 beaver sent to NAFA back in the day the smallest graded large and was only one of those, 21 of the 50 went super blanket. Never see yearling beaver down there so guess that comment about them killing their young is true, id just never heard that before.

Kyle Kaatz came down and i guided him around that mess in '08, think we took about 118 in 10 days if i remember right.

Beaver are extremely territorial… and violent with intruders.

I once read (might have been Osborne Russell's journal) that they came across some beaver ponds in late May and found all the kits floating dead with vicious bite marks. The reasoning being that a male killed the kits so that the female would come back into estrus and breed with him.

Back in the late 80's I hit a coastal lake that hadn't been trapped for at least 10-15 years. I caught 130 beaver off that lake and only three were kits! Makes you think there was something to that infanticide theory. Especially since all late caught females were pregnant with an average of 4 kits in-utero. Breeding season in Oregon is January.
