cats don't need a license , for a reason
no license = zero protection under the law
of your dog is chasing a deer in WI only the warden can shoot it
your cat takes a step off your property it is just another invasive species
dogs in the act of harassing or harming live stock may be shot , but they have to be actively at it
we do not have dog wardens in WI However Every county Sherriff has a Humane officer , a deputy that takes additional training in animal welfare and animal laws. So that they can make initial assessments and file warrants before bringing in the vet for further assessment. counties may be able to share a humane officer we share other training officers and such on part time basis.
if there is too much cat feces and the stink is real , then that property can be abated under other ordinance properties not zoned for agriculture and thus livestock may not have noxious odors from feces extending beyond the property boundary. it is a pain , had to do that with a property here recently.
Not our county sheriff. I had 2 pit bulls show up at my door earlier this week. Stupid things tore down a screen door and almost came through a glass patio door. Called the sheriff and they wouldn't talk to me...they put me through to the humane society. They wanted me to put the dang things in my garage until they could get there. I laughed and said that wasn't going to happen. Long story short, they took off. I told the lady she better get up here and find these dogs...my neighbors might not be as tolerant as me.

Glad I am not in WI or NY. Here in KS shooting dogs and cats is legal if on your property and causing damage. Still legal to shoot your own animals when they need put down too stead of paying the vet and still having the heartache if its a family pet.

I told the lady she better get up here and find these dogs...my neighbors might not be as tolerant as me. you are saying he doesn't have a humane officer , or that they wouldn't send anyone because they didn't have the staff at the time. we have one but he probably won't be on shift for who knows how long , he is one of the several deputies and has to work patrol the but has added animal investigation duties. it is also possible that if you had one who left for a different department recently they may not have been replaced yet. I didn't mean that they actually had one on duty , just they are supposed to have one on staff. I think that is them deferring bad PR if they dispatch a deputy and he dispatches the dogs bad news story. but if the Humane scociety sends a person who is then getting mauled to death by the dogs and the deputy shoots the dog , then the Humane society doesn't lead the charge in the media against the department unfortunate the humane society regularly puts their employees and volunteers in un-due danger and they often suffer serious injury because of it.

the department staffing levels in many counties are SAD , finding new LEO is getting harder and harder. retaining the ones we have is as well. neighboring counties often offer 20K more in pay to poach officers/deputies from near by counties.
you are on your own , in a lot of places the nearest deputy is half way across the county at best and probably tied up on crash.
fatal 1 car crashes are getting to be an every week thing it feels like.

I'm sure you've all seen the cartoons with a dog catcher . In Ohio we have to have dog licenses , but not for cats! Funny years ago in the 1950's we had packs of wild dogs killing sheep and other live stock. Farmers got together much like the old fox hunts , and hunted them down. IMHO A license is a way to control the dog population , you can have as many as you want, but with a license they can track a dog killing livestock. Cats are a huge problem, people DON'T GET THEM FIXED, and let them run outside without caring if they wind up having a batch of kittens. Next thing you know there's feral cats everywhere. The bleeding hearts stopped euthanasia in our county. So the county can't euthanize any pet animals. GODDARDS LAW! So if you have stray cat problems, you can only take them to one of 3 three no kill shelters in the county. Problem is, there's no room for any more cats! It's a felony to kill companion animals here. So what do you do with all the feral cats? The bleeding hearts came up with TNR, means trap neuter and release back where it was caught. Problem with that is , people that have those unfixed pets, don't want the extra kittens, and see one of the TNR colonies , and dump them there. Ignorant ill responsible people cause more problems for everyone. There's even times boxes of puppies are just dumped along a road. IMHO That's the reason for licenses. I caught 23 feral cats 15 years ago in a week. Used to be the Amish , or farmers wanted a few for their barns. NOT ANYMORE , no one wants them. It's all part of the insane animal rights zealots agenda. IMHO a license should be required for cats also. TOO much government , funny it's the government that caused ill responsible people by taking away the right to discipline their children. Pure lack of respect about everything. I'm sick and tired of everything smelling like cat (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) , and finding their crap in my gardens! I guess it all depends on where you live. I know HOA's fine people for feeding cats outside around here now! I love that idea! Cats should be under the same laws as dogs! All because people won't take responsibility for their pets . So I'm confused just a touch with this^^ on a couple of points. 1. how does having a license help track down live stock killing dogs any more than a serial # on a gun stops crime. I'm clearly missing something.. probably something in the process I'm not familiar with since we don't need any license where im at. Maybe if they have a chip ot tags easier to track down the owner for damages once the dogs are caught or killed? 2. you say To much government yet advocate for exactly more government because it will require more government to license cats . SO there is to much government that messed everything up and the answer is more government? Now that will naturally require more funding and powere to enforce whatever they are doing as well. Seems like less government would be a better solution?

the sad reality is we have a bunch of very ill behaved crooks and bad people among us.
a cop friend of mine used to say , Pete if everyone was you we wouldn't need laws or cops. but you are in the extreme minority.

Mac you need to get out of that shart hole of a city you live in lol and cats also need rabies shot and cost more if intact. What did you move to a different county?? LoL Cat thing must be a local deal unless I was looking at older state statues. One I looked at didn't say cats were required rabies. Although I wouldn't know why. Other than cats in this whole country enjoy different liberties than dogs or other so called domestic animals. Mac

We like song birds, tolerate cats at best and never met a dog that didn't like me. So my question is; why do dogs require a license, but cats, birds, gerbils, mice, snakes, etc. don't???

My question is why do people put up with the laws being described here?

I like cats, can't stand song birds. If I had some outside cats, I'd set up a bird feeder close to the ground and set up some cover around it for the cats to hide in wait. Somehow, this does not surprise me at all.
