From now on, only “cage free” eggs are allowed to be sold in Michigan. Prices have only gone up since then.

Cage free eggs just make animal rights whackos and stupid people feel better. That method of farming does not improve the life of the hens any. It just means they are dumped loose in a barn instead of hung in a large cage. They are still just as crowded. They are still debeaked. They still don't get to go outside. They still don't get to eat anything green or fresh. They still live so crowded and contained that they will die in under 10 minutes without an exhaust system. They still don't have much of a life. It does raise the cost of production. It does raise the rate of accidental deaths. It doe raise the overall death rate. Cage free eggs are basically pointless.

Cage-free, free-range and all organic. LOL

I figure it costs us less than a dollar a dozen to grown our own.

I can’t get 3.00 a doz out of my eggs locally. I normally just give them away because I got tired of trying to sell them. They prefer to buy them from Walmart I guess, even if they are 5.00 a doz currently. I just gave the neighbor a dozen recently and he sheepishly asked if he had to do anything to them first to eat them….I said yes! Please crack and remove the shell!

Least expensive eggs I have found, lately, are $3.99/dozen or $4.99/18. If I can give up smoking when they reached $5/pack, I ain't giving $5/doz for eggs! grin

I sell mine for $3.50 a dozen, get about 30 a day. Feed is the cheapest it has been in a long time. $6.50 for 50# at the local mill for 18% layer feed.

Looks as if the prices will be high or higher for the foreseeable future. The Avian Flu is moving with the migrations and that means it will become heavier again in spring. Twice a year with a lot of mutations in a year make this difficult to reign in and with our poultry industry heavily concentrated or centralized it can do a lot of damage. The one good thing from a production aspect is with the broiler industry turning out finished birds in 8-9 weeks they don't live long enough in many cases to get caught up in the disease. The movement through our dairy herds is one reason among several that are causing milk production to be declining the last several months.

We own a small chicken farm and we sell the eggs for $7.00 to a local grocery store. But since the hens slacked off, we had to get rid of them and we will get some more chicks this spring.

I’ll have to ask my son what they pay. They buy crates at a time to use for trapping.

What!?! I pay $30-$32 per 50 pound bag. It’s times like these I wish I was in the Lower 48.
