Make sure whatever spud you have also has a wrist strap or rope and use it! Very easy to lose one.

I have a couple of the base ball bat handled ones. One is lighter than the other and dependent upon conditions I alwayas have one with me while on the ices or in my boat when duck hunting in late season.

I have one made by my great-grandfather, likely very early 1900s. Its made from a Model T steering shaft with the 3-hole flange for tying a lanyard to. The business end was forge welded to the shaft. The cutting edge has a slight curve to it. It cuts ice like nobody's business.
