Whenever I read about fur auctions, there’s always some possums being bought. That means the fur is being used for something. But what??? How is possum used in the American marketplace?
Never too old to learn

Not sure but I’ve always wanted a small blanket made out of them for when I’m sitting in my chair. If you get past the green poop, ugly face and tail the fur isn’t to bad
Everything the left touches it destroys

Possum fur is great stuff for tying flies. Just talk to guys fishing local waters and make friends with a fly tyer. You might find customers that way. Furs that can't be sold, to small, damaged, etc may also be useful to fly tires. They buy lots of pieces of fur.

In the past, a lot of ruffs on fur coats were made out of opossum.
In the mid nineties, I made a really good barbarian Halloween costume out of opossums, I caught, skinned and preserved with borax. All of the women at the Halloween party we had really liked it and really liked petting it. Some were somewhat grossed out once they found out it was made of opossums. It was still the favorite costume at the party.
Keith That's absolutely amazing.

I've always heard it was used for collar and cuff trim.
Back during the last mini-fur boom I remember getting $10.00 each for XXL possum from NAFA.
Eh...wot?

Back in the seventies and early eighties I sold hundreds of possums. My buyer said he was selling them to a glove maker that lined the insides of woman's gloves with either rabbit or possum fur

50 to 55 years ago I was trapping as a youngster... always got $ .50 cents for em at the fur buyer. He told me they use them to make hats, trim etc. But an old lady who grew up during the depression years always gave me $ 1.00 for each clean skinned opossum I would bring her. Seems that is what they ate alot during the depression when she was young and so she ate opossum all her life.

Somebody find out snowy's address so we can all chip in and send him one! My friend and former business partner, Chip and I met at a guardshack, where we had a morbidly obese boss, Moe, who would come in smelling bad and say about himself, "I smell as bad as an opossum today.". Moe did stink somewhat similar to an opossum. Years later, I knocked out an extremely large opossum, that a dog cornered and put it in a garbage can on Chip's porch, with a note that said " A present to remember me by, love Moe." Chip opened the can, when he was taking out the kitchen trash and was startled by the opossum. He put tge lid back on tge can. The next morning, he put it out for the trash collector and watched to see what would happen. The elderly black garbage man knocked the lid off and dumped the opossum in the back of the truck and it immediately jumped off, coming towards him. The elderly black man threw the can away and ran off down the road, while the opossum waddled away. Keith

Possum underfur is some of the softest/toughest fur you'll ever come by, the leather is thin though. Wish there were a market for the ugly things!

You take the ugly off a prime possum, head and tail, and you have a very nice soft fur. It is thin but makes quite nice and pretty, ladies say this, hats. I also make bags, purses, with them. Easy to tan and buff. One big possum one bag, leather added, that gets the pocket quite a lot more than fifty cents.

Was offered $3 each for the ones I put up. A $3 dollar possum is an exceptional price anywhere, not the norm, certainly won't start a trend of possum long liners either. I fleshed them as a kid, to get a buck or two I didn't have, a 2 dollar possum bought a rooster tail spinner back in the 80's though, not so today.
