I once took in a very large opossum, in the round, to sell to Bob Long, who was a fur buyer near Troy, Ohio. Bob told me that it was the largest opossum he had seen in at least 10 years. He told me he was going to pay double the regular price for it and then gave me $2.00, which was indeed double the regular $1.00 paid for adult opossums.

You take the ugly off a prime possum, head and tail, and you have a very nice soft fur. It is thin but makes quite nice and pretty, ladies say this, hats. I also make bags, purses, with them. Easy to tan and buff.
One big possum one bag, leather added, that gets the pocket quite a lot more than fifty cents.

A $3 dollar possum is an exceptional price anywhere, not the norm, certainly won't start a trend of possum long liners either. I fleshed them as a kid, to get a buck or two I didn't have, a 2 dollar possum bought a rooster tail spinner back in the 80's though, not so today.
