It’s pretty good! But did you go from an ANTI to a trapper?!

Swamp, we trapped as kids late 70’s early 80’s. For a few years we’d make about $3-5K split between the two of us. All fur was green…coons $25…Reds $45-65…Bobcats $80-100. We trapped off bicycles and eventually a Honda 250 dirt bike. Release pole was homemade and needed constant repair. I remember “she coons” wouldn’t bring much if the teats were brown so they got released. We drew straws to see who the lucky person was, lol!
I remember the first time we caught a coyote, wasn’t any money for the fur then and they were few and far between so we released it. Don’t remember a lot or any Grey’s back then, but Reds were everywhere and easily caught.
Think we got out of trapping due to “girls” and prices dropping, lol. We’d run our line before school and skin after school. The buyer would come every two weeks to a little store out on 8 Mile Road in Albany. Our moms would take turns taking us to sell. Every check we got was over a grand. Didn’t start back trapping until my late 40’s or early 50’s.

Now that would be a transformation, but no, I had just been mostly fishing and occasionally hunting. Trapping just hadn't been on my radar.

I started small and very multi species. That was for roughly the first 20 years. I kept growing in trap line area and that created some time frame issues, but I was 33-53 then and could pound it pretty hard without needing much vacation time to trap. Starting in the early 2000's I started focusing on coons and a few water areas. Did that for about 10 years. Since that time I have concentrated more on rats and started doing the through the ice as well and that extended my season. As I age I am not able or wanting to go as hard so findng easier ways to run trap lines is important. I am also wanting to go back and do more multi species lines like when I started out. If I am going to s spend money from other sources to run my trap line I may as well do it the way that gives me the most enjoyment.
