Just finished painting and something weird is happening. The paint looks like it’s separating. Is it just bad paint or is it a temp thing. It’s about 60° where I’m painting.

What kind of paint over what kind of finish? Looks like a reaction between the paint and whatever it is on.

It’s on a white painted canvas that was wet. It’s all supposed to be oil based but perhaps different oil?

They’re all oil, unless the can is labeled wrong from the manufacturer.

The canvas was wet with what?

Not all oil based paints are compatible. And the old rule of water over oil is a sometimes rule now. Paint formulations and terminology are all kinds of screwed up these days.

Like "acrylic enamels"

If the canvas was wet the oil based paint would have trouble sticking to it. It looks cool though!

Oil based liquid white. Could it be the paint thinner?

That's happened to me before when painting something that's even slightly damp.

Now I’m curious if it was possible that condensation took place in between when I put the white on and started the painting……?

I appreciate everybody’s input. I’ll have to be more attentive next time.

Yep, for sure could be the thinner.

I have learned, the hard way, to test all paints/finishes/substrates for compatibility before using them on a final project.

I’m gonna leave that but I do have a spot I need to fix where something square left creases in the canvas.
