Pistol marksmanship is how well you grip, & placement of your hands. Use 2 hands, not turning pistol on its side to read serial #. Practice with rounds down range. Big 1911, 45 love the dove tails. I also shot striker pistols 9/40S/W. Have iron, red dots, not sure which I like best. But some days red dots, over iron, eyes aren't what they used to be. GreenCountyPete, statement above is how I practice,( excellent way to be consist & improve accuracy) plus steel targets spaced out for speed, and impacts. I was trained military pistol shooting, and have stayed on that, button hole shotting, head to belt. Most watch to much TV, let bad guy, fire 100 rds auto, then jump up and 2 shots 50/100yds., target down. I'm accurate to 7 to 20 yds. After that have to be shooting the CZ Scorpion with brace, out past 20 yds.
My trapline weapon for yrs., Browning BuckMark 5.5, with iron back fiber optic front, I installed, most accurate, I used ,and packed for years. Enjoy hand guns, have 2 Dillons, set up for pistols, burn alot of powder/bullets

The one I'm talking about doesn't shake awake, you have to push a button, any button. You hold a button for 5 seconds to turn it off, or it'll turn itself off after 12 hours. It's an older vortex sparc before they added the little solar panel (I have a newer one that's got the solar also, but I haven't tested it as long or as thoroughly yet). The point is, they hold up well and one AAA battery lasts a long time. And I have a spare battery in the stock of the rifles that have them, so there's always another 5 ish years of battery on standby

I use to be a halfway decent shot. Shot expert in the military with a 38 cal combat masterpiece, and I shot in a metallic silhouette league with my super Blackhawk. Not so much any more, with age the eyes aren't what they use to be.

If I knew I was going to have to defend myself or an innocent in low light conditions I'd prolly opt for a dot. Other than that I like the iron sites especially for anything that points well for me.

I will say that my ex had a small double action with a green laser on it and I thought I shot it well until I turned the lazer on and cut my groupings down by half at the same range. It is what it is.

here is how Jeff Cooper measured competent with a defensive handgun

as a El prez in sub 10 seconds

an El Prez is 3 USPSA/IDPA targets at 7 yards each target is 1 yard apart left right
you start holstered in the surrender position back facing the target , hands with thumbs above ears
on the beep you turn , draw fire 2 rounds into each target , perform a reload and repeat 2 rounds each target

this is a turn and draw , 6 rounds , reload , 6 more rounds
this is a total of 12 rounds on target the A zone is 6 inches wide 12 inches tall center of torso Jeff coopers A zone or zero down zone was an 8 inch circle basically the same area just different shapes.
time to beat is 10 seconds

then you can see how fast you can push it taking a couple C zone hits

Jeff passed away before slide mounted dot sights were available so if a dot take a second off your time do it in 9 seconds.

I was assuming the op was asking about optic on the top, not laser…

Cooper laughed when myself and one other showed up with G27s

I am decently good with my 9mm out to 25 yards. Does that count?

I have handguns with a red dot and handguns without a red dots, I really like the red dot sights. People say they can fail which is true they can but it you buy a quality sight and don't get your optical equipment from Temu it is a very slim possibility. I would say the failure rate of Trijicon RMR sights is less than .1% and as far as battery life goes that has already been mentioned as over 5 years. Just change your battery on your birthday every year and it will never be an issue.

Now as far as irons never failing, I was an armorer for an agency with approximately 1000 sworn officers, it is surprising how many of those officers in the course of a year managed to mess up the sights on their firearms, obviously it is less likely in a CCW situation because the handgun is held tighter to the body than with a duty belt holster but counter tops are death to rear sights, followed closely by office chairs and seat belt buckles.

I have also seen factory fresh ammo fail to fire, sometimes due to a bad primer, sometimes due to no powder but it failed none the less, is this common absolutely not but when you get a large enough sample size all kinds of off the wall stuff happens.

I was talking slide mounted red dots
the Tirjicon RMR came out in 2007 and it took a few years before they cut slides and mounted them in slide , yes where were already frame mounted dots
they just weren't really practical for a duty weapon yet.

that was one of the very first dots to be used slide mounted
it was really close Jeff passed in 2006

given his work on the scout scope and IPSC I think he would have liked where it went maybe he even predicted it , I never met him, anything that increases performance to win more fights seems like he would have been down with.

YES

they run a LOT of them on competition but there are several duty rated dots out there , a LOT of agencies approving them for use and cops starting to carry them.

the Tirjicon RMR is one of the first and best dots around having been around since 2007 they were originally mounted on the top of an ACOG so you have rapid transition feet to hundreds of yards

competition and then cops figured out to mount the dot on a 45 mount so you could cant the rifle for close work and then get back on the magnified optic for distance

sight radius no longer matters with a dot , you can shoot a 3.7 inch barrel pistol the same as a 5.5 inch barrel pistol where you see the dot is where the round should impact as long as your sighted in and variances in height over bore.

now vortex has a shotgun dot out , I mean I already was running a pistol dot on a shotgun but they came out with a really cool mounting setup to help with several of the issues

dot on bird , squeeze through , poof

you know people get weird like that when you transition from scope to irons and they are like I thought you were an optics guy , ahh I can do both.

Not having a red dot on a defensive (or offensive) pistol in this day and age is like not having a powered scope on a long range precision rifle.

It makes no sense.

“Battery’s go dead”, blah blah (reminds me of the revolver guys trying to defend 5-8 rounds in a gun fight versus 8-20+)

Most good ones have a rear notch so you can still run irons if needed.

I started using one two years ago. There is a bit of a learning curve, while my target acquisition went though the roof, my aiming point acquisition actually struggled a bit for a while.

And my distance shooting, 20-30 yards (or more) got so so much better!

I’m slowly adding them to all my pistols.
