I think these are just about the handiest little 22 for many trapline applications. You can shoot shorts, long rifles or birdshot in them. There is practically no moving parts. They are easy to load and unload (especially for a younger shooter) and they are very small. They are the same size as the old Ruger Bearcats.
I have nothing clever to put here.

No, they are no longer made. I believe they were discontinued about 1968 or so. You still see them around once in a while and they aren't very expensive. They are just "different".

That would be ideal for me. I carry a cheap one around all the time and use it actually a lot. I want to get another one and just keep hide at the ranch when I'm there.

I have one that I carry when trapping. Dad gave it to me when i was 12. Me and the brothers used to call it the “finisher”. I agree the ability to shoot whatever in it is nice

Shot my grandfathers a bunch when I was young, Both it and a Stevens Model 10 that I liked were gone after he died.
Both were a lot of fun and He let me shoot them when I was probably too young (by the state laws ) because they were single shots. LOL Thanks for the memory's

That is part of the beauty of them. being a single shot, they are either loaded or they aren't. There isn't much room for error. I bought one for a young man as a trapping pistol for that very reason.

Ruger wrangler , it is a single 6 with not as nice of metal for the frame. they make great trap line guns , they sell for around 225 6 rounds with a transfer bar safety so they are safe to carry with 6 rounds in the gun
they also do longs , shorts , long rifle just fine , I have a box of the shot but I haven't tried them , I am sure they will shoot from it , it will be a matter of what the pattern looks like at 6-8 feet

Not to be nitpicky, but there is a big difference between a single shot and a single action.
Box says single Shot
Well now the dang picture won't load for me, I could have sworn it said "single action" but maybe I'm just thinking that because it looks like a revolver and he compared it to a Ruger single action revolver. I've got a Ruger Single Six that will shoot all sizes of 22 plus 22 mag if you swap cylinders that I have packed for many years. But the last couple years I have been packing a High Standard nine shot revolver on the trapping that is also a swappable cylinder, although I only have the magnum cylinder for it. Simply because I bought it at least ten years ago and hadn't shot it since I bought it, so I figured I should use it. Lol.
I've got a Thompson Contender that I have loaned to several clients to use, I very much like it for handing to someone who I haven't been around and aren't sure of their safe gun handling because it is a single shot and I know once it goes off I don't have to be so concerned, because it isn't loaded.

It says both. "101 Single Action Safety Single Shot Pistol"

How does that thing work? Looks like you twist the cylinder, load a round, and twist it back into place under the hammer? Kinda like a regular single action revolver, but the cylinder can only turn 1/6 of a turn in either direction?

Yes, the barrel turns slightly one way. The second to the last picture is "open" and ready to load. Drop a shell in, twist it shut and shoot. It is about as simple and basic as they gets.

That's different. So only one chamber on the cylinder? Just rocks out, doesn't rotate via a pawl?
That is correct. One chamber in the cylinder. Basically, that the barrel swings off to the side to load and eject. The hammer and trigger are the only other moving parts.

I had a Stevens Trapper Special single shot 22. I shot shorts, longs, and long rifles in it. I got it from my grandpa years ago. He gave it to me. I gave it to my nephew who is an avid hunter and I knew would really appreciate it.

I had a friend who had one in high school. While we were practicing our "quick draws", he managed to nick himself in the leg with it. I was able to do the same to myself at a later date with a Ruger single six. I no longer practice "quick draws".
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

watch this and it will make WAY more sense how this worked , the barrel and cylinder are one , just cast or machined to look like a barrel and cyclinder
